Message from the Board of Education

Kim Allamby

The Board would like to recognize the outstanding efforts of school administrators, faculty, staff, and students who organized, implemented, and participated in our Many Cultures, One Bison Summit at Beachwood High School and Beachwood Middle School. Over two days, students in fifth through eleventh grades listened to presentations from many esteemed lecturers on topics that promote inclusion and celebrate our cultural, social-emotional, and physical diversity. Trained student facilitators led small-group discussions to engage their peers in conversations from various perspectives aimed at strengthening our school unity. Additionally, students had the opportunity to join the No Place for Hate program, which is designed to fight bias and eliminate bullying in schools. The Board is encouraged by the extent of student participation and staff support. Congratulations for making the Many Cultures, One Bison summit a meaningful and memorable experience for all who attended. In a presentation to students, Beachwood parent and Neurodiversity Family Network guest speaker Melina Aguinaga Meza captured the essence of this summit: “Acceptance and love. That is all that it takes, and we can change the world,” she said.

Ohio Department of Education Family Survey

The Ohio Department of Education would like to invite you to participate in a short, 25 question survey about your involvement in your student’s education. Research suggests that parental involvement is a key predictor of positive educational outcomes. You may be eligible to participate if your child has an IEP and receives special education services. The purpose of collecting this information is to improve services for students with disabilities across Ohio. If you are eligible to participate and you enroll in the study, you will be entered in a drawing for a $50 gift card. Your chance of winning a gift card is approximately 2.0%. Find out more about the survey and if you are eligible.

Beachwood High School Earns College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award

Beachwood High School has earned the College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for expanding young women’s access to AP Computer Science Principles. The award is an important acknowledgement of our efforts to close the gender equity gap in computer science. Research shows that female students who take AP computer science are more likely to major in computer science. “Your leadership in creating more equitable access to computer sciences is helping prepare more young women for the high-paying, in-demand jobs of the future, and giving them the opportunity to solve some of society’s greatest challenges,” stated Trevor Packer, Senior Vice President, Advanced Placement and College Readiness at the College Board. “We want to recognize Craig Alexander for contributing to this great achievement.”

Bison Staff Spotlight: Kristen Walker

This week’s Bison Staff Spotlight is Kristen Walker. As an intervention specialist at the Fairmount Early Childhood Center, Ms. Walker enjoys being a trusted mentor and guide to Beachwood’s youngest learners and their families. Her creative, playful nature shines in her teaching. Ms. Walker utilizes a play-based approach to teaching preschool students the foundational life skills they will need for the rest of their lives. “Students participate in child-choice centers every day,” she said. “We are able to incorporate teaching play skills, peer interactions like turn-taking, and target communication during center time. My favorite centers to set up are the sensory tables and the dramatic play center.” Read More
