What if we told you that there are places on Earth less explored than the surface of Mars? This isn’t science fiction, and these places have a name: they are the mysterious Blue Holes of The Bahamas. What lurks in the depths of these Blue Holes? It depends who you ask! Biologists would claim they contain unknown species, while local Bahamians contend that a legendary creature dwells within. Why not find out for yourself? Embrace the pull of gravity and dive into one of the legendary Blue Holes on your next Bahamian vacation.

But, before we get to all that, we first have to answer a simpler question: what is a Blue Hole? These natural marvels are formed over thousands of years, and are characterized by their deep blue colour, stunning stalactites, and diverse marine life. Put simply, Blue Holes are like underwater sinkholes. These vertical caves result from the eroding influence of water on their limestone foundation. Their name evokes their deeper, darker colouration relative to the water around them.

With an average depth of 150 metres, Blue Holes aren't home to just any ordinary marine life. Inhabitants of the holes have evolved in ways that defy the imagination: transparent shrimp, blind cavefish, and tiny crabs. The fossils you’ll find in a Blue Hole reflect an ancient ecosystem that has been largely undisturbed for 4,000 years. If you’re lucky, you might spot the bones of a long-extinct land tortoise or freshwater crocodile on your dive. The truly fortunate may even discover an all-new species - and get the chance to name it!

For the monster hunters among you, the Blue Holes are also popularly believed to be the home of the mythical Lusca - a beast of Bahamian folklore who drags divers to their doom in the dead of night! Supposedly dwelling at depths of 200 metres, this half-shark, half-octopus grows to up to 75 feet in length and influences the tides by simply breathing. The allure of sighting the elusive Lusca continues to draw Cryptid lovers and deep-sea cataloguers from across the world. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be the first to come face-to-face with this legend of the seas.
