Dear Friends,
I hope you are all well. Welcome back! September always feels like back to something, whether it is work, school or just reality! This year is like no other and 20 years from now, everyone will reminisce and ask where you were when Covid-19 hit? For those who have lost family, friends or colleagues, our heart grieves for your loss. For those who find themselves underemployed, unemployed or just trying to figure out what is next, you are in our thoughts. Keep persevering. The breakthrough is around the corner.
Happy National Hispanic American Heritage Month (September 15th—October 15th)! ICYMI, take a look back at our 2019 NHHM event featuring the great Mario Baeza! Also, there is still time to join us today, Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at 9:00am EST (webinar) for a CLE, “What Does Transgender/Non-Binary Allyship Mean? A Beginning Dialogue.” Register here. See below for further details.
If I can sum up summer 2020? Overworked and full of joy! This summer, our Thurgood Marshall Professional Development Series Workshops hosted more than 370 diverse public high school students and over 145 volunteers (attorneys and non-attorneys) who participated in breakout networking sessions with students. The weekly series (held in both July and August) covered a range of topics including Networking and Career 101, Civil Litigation 101, and Criminal Law 101. The impact? Students who never thought of law as a profession remarked, “These eight webinars were very eye-opening and were a great way to get insight from people that are in the career that I want to do when I get older.” You can’t be it, if you can’t see it! Many thanks to our 35 panelists who gave their time and energy to the program, as well as to the Diversity Pipeline Initiatives Committee, which volunteered its time off schedule.
Is your law firm/corporate legal department a signatory to the Statement of Diversity Principles? Not sure? Check here. Tomorrow Thursday, September 10, 2020 at 4:00pm (EST) (Zoom), join us for our Annual Signatory Meeting! Speakers: Rosevelie Márquez Morales, East Coast Director, Sidley Austin LLP (moderator); Lata N. Reddy, Senior Vice President, Inclusive Solutions, Prudential Financial; Chair, The Prudential Foundation; and Lisa Martinez Wolmart, Chief Litigation Officer, Vice President & Corporate Counsel, Prudential Financial. Special remarks by Sheila Boston, President of the New York City Bar Association and Partner, Arnold & Porter and David Levine, Chair of the City Bar Fund and General Counsel of Bloomberg L.P. Dear Future Colleague (DFC) is a new non-profit that seeks to address educational inequity by providing guidance to underrepresented students applying to graduate school (starting with law school as a pilot program) and competitive scholarships. While the American education system is often referred to as a “meritocracy,” pervasive systemic barriers prevent the application process from being a level playing field. DFC seeks to help change that.
