Happy 2020! It is the beginning of a new decade and the
Office for Diversity & Inclusion
is excited to invite the New Year with good fortune, great company, and the support of you all in the legal community and beyond! We also welcome the latest addition to our team Paula Mukwaya, Diversity & Inclusion Manager.
I am e-meeting most of you for the first time as this is my first letter for the DiverseCity Times – so Hello! My name is Devanshi Shah and I am the Senior Diversity Pipeline Initiatives Coordinator of the Office. Born to immigrant parents from India, a girl who moved to Flushing, Queens, at the age of 8 knowing
only
the 4 other members of her family, and as a former
Legal Outreach
student, I know, understand, and value the impact of a
diverse pipeline program
firsthand.
So far, during my time at the City Bar, I have had the pleasure of coordinating our
Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program
, an internship program for diverse high school students where they are trained on professional skills and placed at a legal employer for the summer. I was also thrilled to help design the
Thurgood Marshall Professional Development Series
, a workshop series (resume writing, interviewing, office etiquette, and networking) for high school students to build vital skills for entering the workforce. And most recently, I’ve led the planning and production of the

Annual LSAT Prep & Law School Conference
, a comprehensive one-day conference taking place on
January 9, 2020,
for undergraduate students and recent graduates. This conference helps map out the law school application process, from the LSAT through the first year of law school. As January 9
th
approaches, I cannot help but think back to a year ago when I attended the conference – a day overflowing with information on all things law school-related. How astonishing!
My 8 months at the City Bar have been
invigorating, fulfilling,
and
motivating
, all thanks to my teammates:

The Corrections & Community Reentry Committee addresses the conditions affecting prisoners,
policing, criminal legislation, parole and probation, and more. It also regularly tours correctional facilities to monitor conditions and dialogue with corrections officials. In the coming months, the Committee will be considering the design and construction of new borough-based facilities among other major projects. The Mindfulness & Well-Being in Law Committee's goals are to provide tools, resources, programs, and thought leadership to the New York City legal community, including law schools, on mindfulness (bringing awareness to the present moment) and other practices that support our health and well-being. The Committee's goals are to build a community of lawyers and non-lawyers interested in mindfulness and the development of greater well-being, which includes diversity, inclusion, social connections, and pro-social behavior.
