Ba de ya, dancing in September
Ba de ya, golden dreams were shiny days
Dear Friends,
I hope you are all well. Who doesn’t appreciate a little bit of
Earth Wind & Fire
to start off one of our favorite months—September! Although summer is my favorite season, I can appreciate how September makes everyone
fall
into place!
Over the summer, I had the opportunity to connect and reconnect with so many new and old friends in the legal profession and in philanthropy, from general counsels, partners, associates, funders, and foundation heads to my beloved peers in the D&I space. The community of diversity, equity and inclusion is far reaching and very supportive. Support is what everyone needs when the hard conversations and the hard decisions keeps getting harder. I am buoyed by so many in our profession that continue to strive for the greater good to make a legal career accessible and to keep diverse attorneys engaged.
This summer was busy at the City Bar. We had the opportunity to host a closing ceremony for our Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Interns (TMSLIP). Our 45 TMSLIP students shared their summer experience at their respective host employers. Students who summered at the
Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor
,
Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz
,
Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP
, and
Disney Theatrical Group and Marvel (New York)
shared their summer of impact which included learning about the great
Martin Lipton
, creator of the
poison pill
. The audience was filled with parents, teachers, supporters, our signatory employers, members of the
Diversity Pipeline Initiatives Committee
including Co-Chairs of the TMSLIP, Marcus Sandifer and Alysha Pizarro and Van Ann Bui, Chair of DPI. Special thanks our keynote speaker
Khaair J. Morrison
’09 TMSLIP, board members of the City Bar Fund and Executive Committee including President Roger Juan Maldonado, CBF Board Chair David Levine, Roxanne Elings, Hon. Andrea Masley, and Marjorie Peerce, as well as Chief Judge Dora Irizarry who presented the certificates of completion to the students. It was a joyous occasion cumulating the work of this Office. This month starts the work all over again and I am so proud to be a part of the magic at the City Bar!
