OCCDL DIVERSITY STORIES
Continuing OCCDL Diversity Stories!

Several member firms and organizations within OCCDL put together short and valuable videos containing a few of their perspectives, experiences, plans, and ideas related to diversity, both in the legal community as a whole, and in Orange County specifically. This content highlights our member organizations, and can serve as a tool for other legal organizations to shape their own diversity ideals and initiatives!

Please enjoy our fifth OCCDL Diversity Story, courtesy of member firm Orrick, Herrington, & Sutcliffe LLP, featuring partners Lorraine McGowen, Warrington Parker, Annette Hurst, and firm chairman Mitch Zuklie. At Orrick, inclusiveness is a core value that shapes the way the firm is run. It's part of their daily conversation about investing in talent, staffing their teams, and measuring their success. In fact, OCCDL's current treasurer, Krystal Anderson, is an associate in Orrick's Orange County office. Orrick has made some groundbreaking moves for diversity in the law, including, but not limited to, an industry-leading parental leave policy, a professional development forum for diverse in-house counsel, and the first legal career fair for military veterans, but the firm is still not satisfied. Some of Orrick's continued efforts this year include launching an Orrick Racial Justice Fellowship Program to enable at least five Orrick lawyers to devote a year each to working on civil rights and social justice issues, adopting the name "Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative" (rather than just D&I), and granting each attorney 50+ hours of bonus eligible time for DEI efforts.

Premiere of "The Soul of America"
THE SOUL OF AMERICA, debuting on TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27 (9:00 PM ET) on HBO and HBO Max, follows writer, journalist, historian and prolific presidential biographer Jon Meacham as he offers his timely and invaluable insights into the United States' current political and historical moment by examining its past. Based on Meacham's 2018 bestseller, The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels and produced by Kunhardt Films (Emmy® winner for HBO's "True Justice: Bryan Stevenson's Fight for Equality"), the film illuminates our current fraught political reality by exploring historical challenges of the past, such as the women's suffrage movement, the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, McCarthyism and the struggle to pass Civil Rights legislation in the 1960s – all instances in which "our better angels" battled against the forces of hatred and division that are recurring themes in American life.
