Connecting with the Counselor

Tia Vincent was born and raised in New York City- Queens. She attended Syracuse University and received an undergraduate degree in Psychology. She also has a Master's in Social Work from SUNY- Stony Brook and a Specialist in School Counseling from the University of Georgia.

She has two daughters- Naia, a Junior at Wake Forest University and Eden, a Freshman at BHS. Outside of school she loves the theater, kickboxing, puzzles and crime TV. Her two dogs, Leo and Kirby, bring extra joy to the family!

Tia joined Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. because she was an only child and wanted to experience a sisterhood that included like-minded ladies who were dedicated to serving the community.

Tia was a classroom teacher before becoming a School Counselor. While in that role, she saw many students who had obstacles that prevented them from maximizing their educational opportunities. She decide to become a School Counselor to help children socially, emotionally, and academically in order to attain educational successes.

BHS Teacher Spotlight: Emerson McClung

World Area Studies

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I was born in New Jersey but my entire family is in Indianapolis. We used to spend our summers there. I am a easy going guy who just wants to help students accomplish their goals. I am a member of the men's basketball program serving as an assistant for the Varsity team. As Head JV coach, our team went 13-1 this year. I am also a photographer/videographer. I shoot various events including sports and weddings all over the southeast (www.emerson-productions.com). I am currently training for an Ironman competition and have my first half Ironman in May. Wish me luck!

Who motivated you to become a teacher?

My high school basketball coach and freshman college professor both motivated me to pursue a career in education. They constantly held me to higher standards.

What is the best thing about teaching at Buford High School?

Buford sets teachers up for success. The administrators hold students accountable, supplies are readily available, and teachers are willing to help if you just ask. I appreciate the support I receive as a teacher in the system.

Who was one of your favorite teachers? Why?

Coach Darling. He never lied to me. He told me the truth even if it hurt my feelings at the time.

How do you inspire/motivate students in your class?

I just encourage my students to pursue any goals they may have. No dream is too large. With athletes, I share my story. I was pretty solid on the court, but not great in the classroom. I do not want student athletes to miss out on opportunities like I did.

BMS Spotlight: Christian Evans

Science Teacher

Where are you from?

I was born in Athens, Georgia. My family originates from Adel, Georgia near Valdosta.

Who motivated you to become a teacher?

My grandparents are both teachers. I wanted to do a job I would enjoy and in which I could make an impact.

What is the best thing about teaching at your school or teaching in your content area?

The best thing about teaching at my school is the support from my coworkers and administration. I can always find someone for help no matter the issue and I can focus on just teaching. I enjoy my content area of science because there are always real world examples of the material we learn and science is something everyone does or is affected by.

Who was one of your favorite teachers? Why?

Mr. Neal was my 6th grade science teacher and he made learning fun. He encouraged me to be curious and ask questions.

How do you inspire/motivate students in your class?

I encourage my students with positive words and I highlight their successes, no matter how big or small.

Are making plans to attend this year's International Night?

International Night is a celebration of the diverse cultures represented within Buford City Schools and the surrounding communities. In celebrating these various cultures, we continue to develop a genuine appreciation for the unique characteristics of others and for the diversity and commonalities that exist among all of us. Attendees will have the chance to taste traditional foods, play games, make crafts, and enjoy interactive cultural dances and musical performances.

Feel free to wear attire that represents your family's heritage.

We hope to see our you at

 International Night!
