Divine Conspiracy

by Father Casey

Five years ago, when the COVID pandemic was just beginning, the virus was not the only thing going viral. Rumors about the virus’ origin caught fire and spread like wildfire. One said it was unleashed by a secret cabal of billionaires to control the masses. Another said it was the result of the new 5G cellular technology that was somehow zapping us from all those towers. In those fear-filled days, conspiracy theories were everywhere.

In hindsight, it makes sense. Social scientists say that whenever people feel particularly powerless, conspiracies become an alternative way of making sense of things. It’s why Q-Anon has been compelling even among the educated; as outrageous as the group’s claims may be, they offer answers to the often inexplicable confusion of the world. I’m not a fan of conspiracies. I consider them distractions from the serious work of solving big problems. I trust scientists more than social media and experts more than influencers.

But I must admit to being a part of a conspiracy. A big one. One that reaches into every corner of the world, and goes all the way to the top. And I think you may be in on it, too...

This Weekend & Week

The Gathering After The Table

Join us this Saturday, June 7, immediately after The Table for a Slider Picnic Dinner on the Bell Tower patio. We will provide a variety of sliders and all the fixings! Please wear red to celebrate Pentecost, and take the opportunity to visit and meet fellow parishioners.

EMF Auction Success!

A huge thank you from the EMF Board for your support of last Sunday's record-breaking EMF Auction. With your help, we've raised over $95,000, far exceeding our goal. And there are still a few unsold items in Roper Hall being offered at bargain prices for this weekend only. Stop by and see if there's anything you can't live without, and help us boost our total even further! There are also a few parties where spaces are still available, such as Grand Tasting II and the ever-popular Martini Party - see (or call) Jim Kirkman to sign up.

VBS Food Drive

This year's Vacation Bible School is collecting shelf-stable food for Now Forward (formerly NDSM). Please donate your items (e.g., canned soups, meats, veggies, peanut butter, rice, and beans) in the Tower Cloister this weekend. As a covenant congregation with Now Forward, Transfiguration makes annual contributions of both money and food to support their efforts.

To volunteer and learn more visit

Now Forward.

Summer Formation Begins

The Book of Common Prayer

Join Fr. Michael Merriman this Sunday morning, June 8 for a class on the development of The Book of Common Prayer (1979).

Fr. Michael was a consultant to the Standing Liturgical Commission from 1973 to 1979 and also participated in the creation of the original Book of Occasional Services. During that period he was also the Chair of the Liturgical Commission of the Diocese of Dallas. After serving on congregations in Texas, California, Minnesota, and Australia (serving as chair of the diocesan liturgical commissions in all of those places), he served as Assisting Priest at the Fig from 2004 to 2016.

This class will provide a rich overview of the origins of our prayer book and where The Episcopal Church could choose to go from here.

This Week & Next Weekend

Serve Dinner at St. Judes

This coming Tuesday, June 10 at 4:45pm you are invited to join us at St. Jude Center, located at the southeast corner of Coit and 635, where we will serve dinner to the residents. In the registration below you may sign-up to provide the food items listed and/or help us serve food.

When signing up, please read the description of needed food items carefully.

The Fig at Dallas Pride

Dallas Pride is next weekend and Open Door invites all members of the parish to join them as we seek and serve Christ in all persons. Volunteers are needed for the our booth on Saturday, June 14 and to walk the parade route with us on Sunday, June 15. Full details are in the registrations below. Please sign-up today to participate.

Legacy of Freedom

Presentation and Potluck

Join our Racial Justice Ministry on Saturday, June 14, at 6:30pm for a presentation by Sheniqua Cummings, a historical marker researcher and descendant of the African American settler families of North Dallas. She will speak about the history of our area, including the White Rock Chapel of Addison, the White Rock Garden of Memories, and the families who settled the area after emancipation. Please bring a dish to share as we explore this hidden history of our region.

Transfigured Nights invites you to the closing of the 2024-2025 season on Sunday, June 15, at 5:00pm with an evensong honoring the feast of the Holy Trinity led by the Transfiguration Choir.

The canticles will be Joanna Forbes L’Estrange’s King’s College Service. H. Balfour Gardiner’s Evening Hymn will serve as the Introit, and Joel Martinson’s ethereal Ancient of All Mysteries – a setting of a poem by Frederick William Faber – will be the Anthem. The Rev. Melody Shobe will be the preacher, and a reception will follow the service in the Gathering Space.

Mark Your Calendar

Newcomer Coffee Hour

If you are new to Transfiguration or you just feel "new", we invite you to mark your calendar and plan to join the clergy for an informal meet and greet and Q&A on all things FIG! This will take place on Sunday June 22 at 10:15am in the Parlor.

You will get a brief history of Transfiguration, some casual conversation and a chance to meet the clergy on more personal level, get acquainted with other newcomers, and enjoy some light refreshments.

Up On the Roof

In 1962 Gerry Goffin and Carole King wrote and The Drifters performed Up On the Roof. It was #5 on the charts. Well, what's up on the roof of our Nave is preparing to be a Summertime hit too as we enter the peak season for its electrical production. Take a moment and see what it produced in the first 5 months of this year:

  • Generated 9.6 MWh of electricity
  • Offset 7.7 tons of carbon
  • Contribute the equivalent of planting 116 trees, charging 867,285 phones, or powering 10 electric cars to drive across the U.S.

Given the exceptionally cloudy weather we've had the first part of 2025 we are at about one-half what we produced this time last year. The upcoming 3 months of solar production should produce more energy than we have produced over the last 5 months.

The Youth of the Fig are invited to join in an evening of Karaoke in The Youth Center, Sunday, June 22 at 6:00pm.
