Our Connection with the Moon
Why is the moon so important when it comes to magick? The moon pulls at the ocean’s tides, and since we’re made up of at least 60% water, it has a profound effect on our realities too. Ever notice how certain people get a little loony on the Full Moon? The terms loony and lunatic stem from the word lunar which means moon. There’s a reason people act differently on the Full Moon, and when we tune into the moon’s phases, we start to notice just how much the moon affects us and our surroundings. Cops and nurses know how much the full moon can affect people. Just ask them.
The Female Body & The Moon
Just as the moon is reborn, grows, reaches its fullest potential, then wanes again, so do our bodies. For thousands of years, women have noticed their moon cycles (menstruation) syncing up with the moon’s phases. This is lunar magick at its core. Just as the moon waxes and wanes, so too does the womb. This is why the moon is often associated with the Goddess.
The Triple Goddess & Our Lives
The Triple Goddess is associated with the moon’s phases: the maiden (waxing moon), the mother (full moon), and the crone (waning moon). We all go through these phases in our lives (both men and women) corresponding to our physical bodies: youth, adult years, and our elder years. And corresponding with our spiritual bodies: when we begin our journey, the middle of our journey and the end. We are all attuned to the moon phases and lunar magick, it’s just that most people don’t realize it.
Benefits to working with the Moon energies
The Moon’s energies have sway over the subconscious & our emotions. The most intense manifestation is usually done through our emotions. Being able to control our emotions at their very core through subconscious, yet intentional direction through ritual has been the easiest way I have found to create distinct change in my reality. Using this subconscious sway to control our emotions are the reasons why working with the different energies of the moon through its different phases is so important to having a strong, resilient and fertile foundation to your reality.
The Moon is known to have energetic influences over:
- Dreams
- Subconscious realms
- Primal instinct
- Intuition - increase your “gut instinct”
- Chakra - become more aligned with your 3rd eye
- Personal growth
- Ebb & Flow of emotion (gain understanding and control over your emotions)
- Help with these bodily functions - pancreas, cerebellum, pineal gland, womb & stomach
The Crone Goddess:
The Dark or New Moon is associated with the crone version of the Triple Goddess. I call her The Crone Goddess as she has been given so many labels, titles and names. Just a few are Hecate, Cerridwen, Kali, The Morrigan, Caillech, Selene, Diana, Artemis, Nephthys, Arcadea. The Crone is the Queen of the Night. She has access to the underworld realm and brings about the end of cycles. She is associated with night and darkness, the waning moon and especially the dark moon. She is known to give the practitioner help with reaching the unconscious realm, which greatly assists when performing deep shadow work. She has immense wisdom and power and has been known to assist with healing and transformation. She always takes a mothering roll to assist the outcast; She is also associated with the Third Eye; Owls; Vultures and flesh-eating birds; black birds (especially ravens and crows); times of transition, such as dusk, dawn, and midnight; divination, prophesy, and especially scrying.
