St. Martin of Tours San Jose
PARISH NEWS AND UPDATES
DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY, APRIL 19 2020

Dear Friends,

The extraordinary events caused by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have impacted all of us in many ways. Our mission to help people encounter and grow in relationship with Jesus and to give witness to Him in the world continues but in radically different ways.

Our parish has become a major food distribution site in collaboration with Catholic Charities and Second Harvest. We have a pop-up distribution on every Wednesday at St. Martin of Tours. This started last month. We provided food to 300 families that first week. This past Wednesday, we distributed food to 750 families.

We’ve had to make difficult decisions to suspend Masses in the church and in its place we had live-stream the Masses. In-person classes had to be changed to Zoom meetings instead. Events, and other ministries that required personal interactions had to be suspended. Many in our community have suffered if not from the disease itself, from isolation, and from a lack of work.

This reality has impacted our parish in another way through a significant drop in our Sunday collections and donations. While we understand why this is happening, we find ourselves in the difficult and unfortunate situation of having to temporarily reduce the parish staff hours to match the resources available to us to ensure the financial stability of our parish. In making these decisions, I have tried to keep the well being of every staff member who are not only co-workers but also family to me.

Starting April 8 th , Fr. Gener and I will also share the struggle by reducing our salaries and stipends until we resume back to normalcy.

Please, continue to support our parish in any way that you can. You could donate online here or mail it in to the parish office.

Please take good care of yourself. Keep up the faith, spirit and share the love. We will get through this in God’s grace. Please continue to pray for us, our country and our world. If the parish or I can do anything for you, please feel free to email me.

Praying for all of you and requesting your prayers,

Fr. Saju Joseph
