Divine Proportion, the Golden Ratio, and Feng Shui

Have you ever noticed certain room sizes feel more pleasant than others and some just feel odd? That's divine proportion. There is a scientific equation behind that pleasing proportion. From the great pyramids of Egypt to De Vinci's "Vitruvian Man," the golden ratio or divine proportion is used to illustrate appealing works of art. Nature is even chock full of divine proportions. Learn more about this simple yet effective ratio in this month's newsletter!

Welcome!

Tip of the Month
Tip of the Month: The Golden Ratio

The Golden ratio is a special number found by dividing a line into two parts so that the longer part divided by the smaller part is also equal to the whole length divided by the longer part.

It is often symbolized using phi, after the 21st letter of the Greek alphabet. Phi is usually rounded off to 1.618. This number has been discovered and rediscovered many times, which is why it has so many names - the Golden mean, the Golden section, divine proportion, etc. Historically, the number can be seen in the architecture of many ancient creations, like the Great Pyramids and the Parthenon. In the Great Pyramid of Giza, the length of each side of the base is 756 feet with a height of 481 feet. The ratio of the base to the height is roughly 1.5717, which is close to the Golden ratio.

The Golden ratio also appears in all forms of nature and science including seed heads, flower petals, pine cones, shells, spiral galaxies like the Milky Way and more.

Take Part in a New, Exciting Earth-Conscious Feng Shui Certification Program! On-Site or Online! The choice is yours! Join a small group of soul-centered people who are looking to make a difference in their own path as well as others.

The Re-Nature Feng Shui philosophy, developed by founder Maureen Calamia, is based on the fact that we need to restore nature back into our lives. It is more important than EVER in our day-to-day lives. And I believe that the ancient philosophy of Feng Shui, along with spiritual practices, is a wonderful way to do this. By bringing the natural world into our spaces - our inner and outer spaces - we restore balance in our lives. We will emphasize the NATURE aspects in our lives and bringing that back into focus for alignment with our health and well-being.

Final Thoughts

We all have our own visually satisfying tastes, but many do not know that there is a ratio associated to it. Our attraction to divine proportion is somewhat innate, studies have shown.

After reading this newsletter you will in no doubt start to see the connection of the golden ratio in many things such as nature, art, the human body and architecture. The eyes know what the eyes likes. The next time you step into a room, see if you can determine whether it has divine proportion or not. Can you divide the longer length of the room by the smaller length and it still be equal to the whole length divided by the longer length? If yes, then the room is in divine proportion and most assuredly pleasing. Perhaps these are the rooms that people are most drawn to. In our own homes we all have rooms that we favor and feel the best in or we strive the best in them. If you are an artist, you may have a room that you do your best work in and other rooms that give you no inspiration at all. Tap into that innateness of the golden ratio and find the room that inspires you to create whatever your heart desires!
