DDD Director's Corner
Hi everyone,
It was great to see many of you at the Quarterly DD Community Forum which was held last month at URI's Foundation Square. It was well attended and with presentations from many of our partners, we enjoyed fruitful and resourceful discussions on numerous topics - the notes and PowerPoint can be found here for your convenience.

Our next Community Forum will be held on Tuesday, September 11th from 4:30 - 6:00 pm at the East Providence Senior Center. The senior center is located at 610 Waterman Ave in East Providence -we hope you will join us.

These forums continue to be an important component of our commitment to effective communication with you. To ensure that we are addressing your interests, we have developed a survey that will assist us in creating responsive agendas. You can access the survey here and we appreciate your anonymous suggestions.

In response to the well-deserved retirement of several of our colleagues as well as to expand the resources of the Division, we are moving along with our recruitment efforts and are currently in the process of hiring nine employees. We are hoping to bring the new staff on-board before Labor Day. In the meantime, wishing you an enjoyable summer.

Hi folks,

As you know, the last few months had been a busy season for the Department. My staff and I spent quite a bit of time at the State House testifying at hearings and/or providing written testimony for various committees.

I want to personally thank the families, providers and their staff who came out to the House and Senate Finance Committees and testified on behalf of the budget and other important pieces of legislation. We truly appreciate the time you so generously gave to ensure that your voices were heard.

I will be out of the office for a few weeks for knee surgery and Tom Coderre, Senior Advisor to Governor Raimondo, will serve as BHDDH's Acting Director in my absence. H e will work closely with Kerri while I am out.

We hope you are able to enjoy these summer months with family and friends - the summer goes by much too quickly...

Sincerely,
Becky

Consent Decree Coordinator Update
Hello Community Partners and Families,

My first six months as the Consent Decree Coordinator (CDC) has been filled meeting with community partners, provider agencies, state agency partners, advocates, on-site provider visits, community forums, the Department of Justice site visit, and countless learning experiences for me personally. I thank everyone who took time to welcome me in this new role and show me the ropes.

It became clear to me after my first week that everyone I met is deeply committed to working toward a system that is rooted in the principles of person-centered planning with the goal to provide meaningful integrated employment and day services for Rhode Islanders living with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. I am impressed by all that has been accomplished and humbled by our responsibility to do more.

One item I heard loud and clear from our community is the need for enhancing communication and coordination between the state agencies and community partners. In my role as CDC I share in the responsibility to ensure the State and community have a strong communication strategy.  I will be developing a quarterly Consent Decree Coordinator Update to include: Summary of Activities, Upcoming Events/Activities and Policy Updates. This will be a work in progress - I want to make sure I am effectively communicating not only what is being done, but what is still needed by all parties. The Update will be sent to this listserv so you will receive your first email from me soon.

Please know that I always welcome guidance, suggestions, and solutions to help move our state to our shared goals. My email is tina.spears@ohhs.ri.gov and please feel free to contact me if you would like to schedule a time to speak with me.

Thank you for the warm welcome as the Consent Decree Coordinator and I look forward to our progress on system reform.

Best,
Tina
