1933 N. Meacham Rd., Suite 127, Schaumburg, IL 60173
For those with substantial assets, net worth, and income, divorce — an already complicated event — becomes even more complex. Special consideration needs to be given to the valuation of assets and the equitable division of them. Parties may also run into issues with alimony, child support, and estate planning that require special attention. This seminar will look at strategies for addressing these issues and navigating the complexities of high-asset or net worth divorces.

Join attorneys Joseph Olszowka, Colleen Breems, and Heather Walser, as they take a critical look and offer strategies for issues that arise in high asset/net worth divorce cases.

Alternative Approaches to a Traditional Divorce - Part 1
|
In this first segment of a 3-part series, Lavelle Law attorneys Levinson and Corrigan are joined by Amy Wilhelmi to discuss alternatives to the traditional divorce process. They share thoughts on collaborative divorce, mediation, and other approaches that can be far less stressful and difficult for all involved.
|
|
|
In part 2 of our video podcast series, the discussion centers around parenting responsibilities during and after a divorce. In an alternative approach such as collaborative divorce or mediation, parents can reach agreements on parenting time and decision-making that better protect their children from the trauma of a divorce.
|
|
|
Our participants wrap our 3-part series with a discussion about the division of property and assets during a collaborative divorce, mediation, or another non-traditional divorce.
Please reach out to Patti Levinson or Annette Corrigan if you have any questions. They can be reached at 847-705-7555.

Illinois Legislature Passes Paid Leave for All Workers Act
|
On January 10, 2023, the Illinois legislature passed Senate Bill 208, known as the Paid Leave for All Workers Act (“Act”). The legislation has been sent to Governor Pritzker, who said he is looking forward to signing it. Once signed, beginning January 1, 2024, the Act would require nearly all Illinois employers to provide employees with up to 40 hours of paid leave per 12-month period, to be used for any purpose.

Court Upholds IRS Use of Judicial and Administrative Means to Collect Past Due Taxes
Does $31K in monthly living expenses seem reasonable? The IRS doesn’t think so, at least for Richard Varner. In February’s tax article, attorney Tim Hughes summarizes a recent decision in which the Federal Court denied the Taxpayer’s motion for equitable relief based upon hardship and denied his request to have the Court either return collection jurisdiction to the IRS so that he may administratively appeal, or require the United States to comply with the Federal Debt Collection Procedures Act.

Grandparents in many families play a significant role in the care and upbringing of their grandchild(ren). Many grandparents provide for the daily care and needs of their grandchild and have had significant regular contact with a grandchild before the parents of the grandchild divorce, legally separate, or are no longer living together and have never been married.
In this article, Joseph Olszowka outlines the considerations Illinois courts examine when determining whether a grandparent should receive visitation rights with a grandchild.

February’s Lavelle Law Employee Spotlight is Attorney Chance Badertscher, an esteemed associate on our real estate team who embodies its tagline, “closing deals with confidence.” When Chance is not helping his clients with their residential and commercial real estate deals, or winning our firm-wide Baggo tournament, he keeps a pretty full life. Check out some fun facts about Chance.
Where is your favorite place in the world? Ireland. I lived there for a few months after graduating college. The hiking is incredible, the people are hilarious and welcoming, the weather is perfect if you like the rain as much as I do, and the food (outside of Dublin) is actually delicious.
What is the coolest thing you’re working on right now? The sport of Canicross, where you run cross-country races with your dog. My wife and I participate with our two dogs and they are the best, most exciting races I have ever participated in!
If you could visit anywhere in the world you’ve never been, where would you go? Antarctica. The most ambitious goal on my Bucket List is to run the Antarctic Ice Marathon (or at least hang out with the penguins).
Do you have a favorite charity you wish more people knew about? I am on the Professionals Board for Imerman Angels. Imerman Angels’ mission is to provide comfort and understanding for all cancer fighters, survivors, previvors, and caregivers through a personalized, one-on-one connection with someone who has been there. Please contact me if you would like more information!
