Crafting For the Homeless
Sunday, October 9, 2016 - 1:00pm
Come join us for our 3rd year of making a difference on Sunday afternoon, October 9th, from 1:00-3:00 pm, to craft items for the homeless population in the area. Using traditional crafts, we will make hats, scarves, blankets and sleeping mats from yarn and fleece fabric. Our group will meet the first Sunday of the month after this session.
Some people come to learn to knit or crochet, others arrive with projects already underway. Some are members of BAJC; some are not. All are welcome! We donate our projects to Groundworks Collaborative.
Our meetings are lively and welcoming, with adults and children of both genders who talk and work and share ideas and thoughts. Some people take yarn home to continue their work on projects. In addition to some funding from BAJC, we welcome donations of yarn and fleece.
For questions or comments, please call Janet Athens at (802) 254-8454.

All are invited and welcome to gather for a pre-election, nonpartisan, apolitical prayer vigil at the First Congregational Church of Burlington, UCC, 38 South Winooski Ave. We are all feeling the stress and tension over this election and area clergy want to offer our community a time and a place to come together for healing and hope. No politics - just song, poem, and prayer. The vigil will take place outdoors, weather permitting. The event is hosted by First Congregational Church of Burlington, UCC, with planning assistance from area clergy representing interfaith and interdenominational traditions.
Book Group(s) Forming!
Sunday, November 13th, 11:00 am
Ruach HaMaqom will form its first book club! Rabbi Jan will present a few choices with which to begin, and we'll decide which one to choose. Or perhaps you have a suggestion? Bring it along to put into the mix. More than one group can form; we can set up a que to read; members of these groups can choose when and where to meet. What a lovely way to enter into the colder months.

At the core of How Success Thinks are six key productivity concepts, from motivation and goal setting to creativity and relationship building, that explain why some people get so much done. Drawing on 3000 years of Jewish wisdom from the Talmud and Kabbalah-as well as the latest findings in neuroscience, psychology, and behavioral economics-this eye-opening course explains that the most productive people on earth don't merely act differently; they view the world, and their choices, in profoundly different ways.
By learning how to cultivate your signature strengths, adopt a growth mind-set, access your inner well of creativity, deal with weaknesses, and overcome procrastination and other obstacles that lie in the way of your success, Jewish wisdom and positive psychology will help you get more of what you want and less of what you don't.

Our new Great Jewish Books Fall Program takes place October 30 to November 4 here at the Yiddish Book Center. In the weeklong program, adult learners will explore modern Jewish literature through novels, stories, and poems by such diverse authors as Isaac Babel, Franz Kafka, Cynthia Ozick, Dahlia Ravikovitch, Isaac Bashevis Singer, and Anna Deveare Smith.
The theme for the inaugural program will be Power and Powerlessness. Between the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries, Jews across the world often found themselves subjected to prejudicial treatment and brutal violence. At the same time, however, they also achieved unprecedented levels of political, economic, and military power.
With spaces filling quickly, we urge you to register as soon as possible. Learn more and register here. And if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call Program Assistant Sylvia Peterson at 413-256-4900, ext. 143.

Adult B'nei Mitzvah Class
This year Havurah is offering an Adult B'Nei Mitzvah class, culminating in a special Saturday Shabbat service in June 2017. This opportunity is open to women and men, whether you can read Hebrew or not. It is open whether you had a Bar/Bat Mitzvah and want to "renew your vows," or you never had one and would like to have the experience of being formally called to the Torah. It is also an opportunity for study (but not too much!) and learning by meeting together with our Director of Education, Sarit Katzew periodically during the year.
Members of the class will learn to read a few lines from the Torah (don't worry-you will receive a recording of those lines and have plenty of time to practice!). But we also want to be flexible. So, in addition to or instead of reading from the Torah, you could learn a portion of the service, for instance, chanting part or all of the Haftarah portion. The class will focus on what you need to know to read from the Torah, but will also include a focus on other aspects of Judaism and Jewish Ritual.
We would like to have an informational meeting to gauge interest and help tailor the class to its participants. Please email Sarit with your availability for the month of November.
