Do you love to cook or simply to eat? I love both! And these days it gets harder and harder to find time for real scratch cooking. Shockingly I've found that many people don't even know how to cook!

So many people go out to eat or grab something quick on their way home from work and yet we all know most pre-made food is full of salt, fat and sugar which are all horrible for our health.

Sometimes people don't cook because they don't know how to utilize the ingredients that have on hand. A trick to good home cooking is knowing what food gets used for what, how to determine equivalent measures and good substitutions should you find yourself short an ingredient and don't want to go back to the store.

A quick reference guide can be found here, at Food Subs.
This is a Cook's Thesaurus, offering a wide variety of helpful information. Want to know how many potatoes it takes to make about 2 cups mashed? Try 1 lb or 4 cups cubed. That will do the trick!

Out of butter? Did you know you can substitute 3 tablespoons of flat beer for every tablespoon of butter called for in a recipe? I thought not!

No time to scratch cook? I've found that Trader Joe's
offers a wide range of frozen 'helpers' that contain little to no artificial ingredients or preservatives. Their frozen mashed potatoes alone make the trip to Trader Joe's worth it. The only ingredient is potatoes and they come in discs so you can make as little or as much as you'd like.

Need a quick but nutritious meal? What about those meal delivery services? I personally haven't tried them but if there are only two of you and neither of you have severe food restrictions, I think this is a great way to go. To learn more, here is a review of 10 of the meal delivery systems.

Even if you do have dietary restrictions, some of these meal delivery programs offer customizations like keto, low carb, vegan, paleo, gluten free, etc. In my case, I have a boyfriend who doesn't eat anything green or any vegetables other than potatoes and corn (corn is technically a grain, btw) so it doesn't make sense to use a meal delivery system.

He thinks he makes cooking easy -- protein, potatoes, corn. I think it makes cooking incredibly hard. How do you avoid boredom when choices are so limited? Shhhh! Between you and me, sometimes I use vegetables for flavoring but then puree them using the stick blender into a gravy that he happily eats.

If you hate grocery shopping but love cooking, we offer shopping services. I know that nowadays many grocery stores and even Costco are offering shopping and delivery services but then you risk getting whatever they bring you, particularly as it relates to produce.

Our personalized shopping assistance ensures you get the quality of produce you prefer and the brands you trust at the store of your choosing. Here is a sample grocery list  should you need one. If you'd prefer it in Excel so you can type right into it, please email us and we'll send it along.

And then, if you get the munchies (and who doesn't?), here is a great slideshow of delicious snack ideas
(and if you look under the first slide, there is also a link for healthy-ish store bought snacks.). Just ignore the ad placements (they drive me crazy too!) but the snacks look yummy!
By the way, if you're getting ready to leave for the summer and have unopened, non-perishable foodstuffs, we are happy to pick them up and take them to the Foodbank. Our Kans for Kids program is ongoing!

Until next time, maybe we can all try to eat home-cooked food at least two days per week. It's a reasonable goal and one that will promote better health, save some money and encourage more family time. Happy Eating!
