Do You Know Your Neighbors?
“The disappearance of these once-central relationships—between people who are familiar but not close, or friendly but not intimate—lies at the root of America’s economic woes and political gridlock.”
The Vanishing Neighbor, Marc Dunkelman

How long has it been since you talked with your neighbor? Borrowed that cup of sugar, or a tool to work on the car? Had your neighbors over for BBQ? Let your kids play in their backyard? Knew each little trick or treater? Played cards with the elderly woman up the street? Experienced the camaraderie of fireworks on the 4th of July?

As American surburbia expands, we are losing many of the rich pleasures of the communities of our childhood, leading to rising isolation, loneliness and suspicion. Read here in Neighborliness, as Jenny Godwin explores the research on neighborhoods, and the power that cohousing has to rebuild community.
Meet Our Construction Project Manager
Darryl Berlin
We are grateful for our Construction Project Manager, Darryl Berlin. He brings many talents to the job. Darryl recently graduated from CoHousing Solutions’ yearlong training, the 500 Communities Program. He has practiced the art of natural building for over 20 years. Through his work as a builder, design consultant, community member and educator, he is able to merge his passions for fine craft, ecological stewardship, relationship to place, and social justice, all while getting in the mud and building homes.  Darryl is hardworking and accessible, and he brings exceptional people skills to the job of getting Fair Oaks EcoHousing built on time and within budget!
Meet Our New Member
Kathryn Quinnell
Kathryn Quinnell was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in Iowa and Minnesota. After earning her MFA in Stage Design at the University of Iowa she worked for almost a decade as a theatrical costume cutter/tailor for various regional performing arts groups, including the Minnesota Opera, the Minneapolis Children’s Theatre, the San Diego Old Globe, the Manitoba (Canada) Theatre Centre, and the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival. Most recently for the past six years she has built costumes as a volunteer tailor for the Livermore Shakespeare Festival.
After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1991 she changed careers. For the past 23 years she has been employed as an AutoCAD drafter/technical illustrator for an environmental remediation firm with offices in the Bay Area.

With retirement in view, Kathryn is looking forward to being an enthusiastic member of the gardening and cooking teams at Fair Oaks EcoHousing, and possibly re-integrating into Sacramento’s professional theatre community. Her favorite hobbies are quilting, knitting and sewing for charity, and traveling in Europe. Most recently, she took up brewing beer and mead – and looks forward to hosting beer and mead tasting parties!
