Time for Tax Planning

While you're busy making lists, here's something else to add: now is the the time to connect with your Tax Manager to develop a year-end strategy to maximize deductions, reduce your tax liability, and stay ahead of changing tax laws and regulations. Here are some noteworthy considerations for this year:

  • RMDs (Required Minimum Distributions): If you turned 73 this year or have an inherited IRA, you must take your RMD by December 31 to avoid a penalty.
  • QCDs (Qualified Charitable Distributions): IRA owners age 70 1/2 or over can transfer up to $100,000 to a registered charity tax-free each year.
  • EVs (Electric Vehicles): There is still time to purchase a new or used EV to qualify for federal and state tax credits up to $7500. Energy-efficient improvements to your home also qualify for credits.
  • Charitable Contributions: Donations must be made by December 31 and you must itemize to claim them on your federal return. If you don't itemize, you may still be able to claim a portion of qualifying charitable contributions made during the tax year. Save those receipts! And make sure you are donating to legitimate, tax-exempt organizations (you can use the IRS Tax Exempt Search Tool).
  • Other Deductions: Business expenses (including your tax prep fee!), gifts to family members, 529 Plan contributions, HSA and retirement account contributions.
