Places of Worship Advisory Board (POWAB)

The Places of Worship Advisory Board (POWAB) consists of members of the regional faith community, partnering organizations, and departments of health in the Metropolitan Washington Region. POWAB exists to provide resources, advice, and supports efforts that result in improvements in whole person health for individuals, families, and communities. Our work focuses on the influence of faith institutions and faith-based organizations on the life and health of people who participate in faith-based services. POWAB hosts monthly meetings that are open to the public.

In Loving Memory of
Dr. Ron Simmons

In the midst of so many recent losses, we note with regret the passing of Dr. Ron Simmons, a scholar, community activist, and longtime advocate, role model, and mentor to Black gay men living with/at risk for HIV. Dr. Simmons passed away on March 29, 2020, from complications related to prostate cancer.
Between 1992–2016, Dr. Simmons served as President/CEO for Us Helping Us, People Into Living, Inc. , an organization that provides HIV prevention and support services to the African American community in the Washington, DC, area. Dr. Simmons was a strong advocate for Black men living with HIV, and he supported many people who have devoted their careers to responding to the HIV epidemic. We the Places of Worship Advisory Board Honor our anestor Dr. Ronald Simmons.

Opioid Operational Command Center Announces Call for FY2021 Grant Proposals
Maryland’s Opioid Operational Command Center (OOCC) is pleased to announce a call for proposals for grants under its Fiscal Year 2021 Competitive Grant Program. NOTE: Due to the coronavirus disruption, the application deadline for FY21 proposals has been further extended to
Friday, June 12, 2020 at 5 p.m.

The purpose of the OOCC’s Competitive Grant Program is to distribute grant funding to the highest-scoring proposals received from state and local governments and private, community-based partners that serve to meet some of the greatest needs around the state. The funding available for the OOCC’s FY21 Competitive Grants Program is approximately $5 million.

Reimbursement up to $500
The District of Columbia Department of Health (DC Health) Hearing Aid Assistance Program (DC HAAP) provides District residents with a reimbursement to offset the cost of purchasing a hearing aid. Residents that purchase/purchased a hearing aid between June 1, 2018 and September 1, 2020 can qualify to receive a reimbursement up to $500 per applicant depending on the out-of-pocket cost.

To be eligible for the reimbursement one must meet the following criteria:
  • A resident of the District of Columbia; 
  • 0 - 14 years of age;
  • 65 years of age or older; 
  • Have a disability;
  • Have an annual gross household income of less than $100,000. 
To receive a reimbursement, the applicant must complete the  HAAP application  in its entirety. The application must be accompanied by the following required documentation:
  • Proof of District residency;
  • Proof of income;
  • Proof of hearing aid purchase; and
  • Verification of hearing impairment from a doctor.
Reimbursement will be contingent upon the availability of funds. Anyone interested in applying for a reimbursement should visit  DC Health's website  to complete an application online or click on the link above to be taken directly to the application.
