Creating a 3D Model

Whether you're building a 3D model for film, television, or other media which calls for 3D scanning, here are some steps you can follow to make the process easier.
3D Scanning Talent
If the character you need scanned has a specific wardrobe, have the talent's outfits and props brought with them to the shoot. If the project calls for period pieces, there is always the option to rent the costumes for the talent to wear during the scanning process. The goal is to capture everything you need to create the exact model to match the needs of your show or test run.

During the scanning process it is important that the talent stays completely still. A common tendency is to move, talk, or change expressions without thinking about it. Make sure to communicate that the less movement there is the higher the detail can be.
After the 3D scan is complete, there is a professional photo shoot with the talent to capture all angles of their face and body. We can also capture several facial expressions to create a variety of emotions for the digital double. You can help out the model by having a mirror nearby as you're giving direction on what emotion they need to portray.

At the end of the process, we'll have what we need to start processing the digital double. For best results, let the talent talk over the process with you, or prep them for the 3D scanning and let them know beforehand what is needed.

Large Area 3D Scanning

Large area 3D scanning (LIDAR) has become a common tool used to produce visual effects in film today, and is quickly moving into television.

LIDAR 3D scanning allows you to digitally capture the exterior and/or interior of a broad range of buildings, vehicles, and environments. The scan data is used to build out an exact replica of a building or environment, such as The White House, The Eiffel Tower, or a sport stadium, and can be digitally inserted into any scene.

2nd Stage of Large Area Scans

Here are some benefits of using this type of 3D scanning:

  • Accurate measurements
  • Entire environments captured
  • Ability to capture large objects such as a car or plane
  • Ability to reuse data to replicate any scene or environment
  • Quick turn-around
3D scanning works well for the entertainment industry. An example is when footage is needed during post after filming has already wrapped up.

Outside of the entertainment industry, LIDAR can be used by law enforcement to re-create the scene of a crime, or for computer-aided design (CAD) files of buildings such as an electrical plant. The military also uses it as a sort of radar on the front of aircraft to analyze the terrain, and identify objects of interest.
The Future of Video Games

Video games have come a long way since Atari came out with PONG back in 1973. From the new Destiny franchise to its predecessors like Grand Theft Auto, World of Warcraft, Counter-Strike, and Starcraft, the increase of quality 3D graphics over the years has brought video gaming to an all time high.
The game-play mechanics and visual graphics are what appeals to gamers today. As the characters and in-game assets become increasingly life-like, the video game experience will become more of an augmented reality.

3D scanning and/or LIDAR scanning is beneficial when there is a need to produce a realistic character or in-game digital asset. These digital assets can be used in a  video game trailer and then again in the game itself. If produced in high resolution, this will allow a smooth transition from the trailer to the actual game-play.

We are advancing into a future of augmented reality with the Oculus Rift on the market. The challenge is the ability to create an exact replica of a real life character from a sports team or other real life situation. With the help of accurate 3D scans, a higher frame rate of facial motion capture, and evolved facial rigs, the deformations will be more realistic and believable.

We look forward to the time when games, television, and film are more synergistic with each other, and interactive.
