Mayor Al Memorial 5k:
1 Mile Croc Walk &
Family Fun Day
LOREAUVILLE, La. --- On March 30, 2019, the third annual Mayor Al Memorial 5K & 1 Mile Croc Walk will be held at the Loreauville Park.

A 1 mile walk will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the 5K set to begin at 9 a.m. Awards will follow immediately after the race. The band 2 In The Chamber will be performing along with musician Minos Derouen. There will be soft drinks and jambalaya all free of cost. The kids will be entertained by fun jumps, photo booth, a magician, snacks and face painting. A silent auction will also be going on all day until the end of the event at 2 p.m.

The run will honor former Loreauville Mayor Al Broussard. The funds raised will cover event expenses and then will be put towards the research of the New Acadia Project and new recipient, the Acadian Odyssey Monument to be placed in the Mayor Al Memorial Park in Loreauville.

On April 3, 2015, Mayor Broussard passed away after a head on collision caused by a juvenile passenger in the other vehicle. His family and his town were left heartbroken. At the time of Broussard's untimely death he was serving as chairman of the "Projet Nouvelle Acadie" or the "New Acadia Project."

The project is a publicly supported effort to discover and study the home sites and unmarked graves of the Acadians who settled in South Louisiana and established what is known today as Acadiana - the homeland of the Cajuns.

Broussard's deep passion for the project was rooted in being a direct descendant of Joseph "Beausoleil" Broussard, the very first Broussard to have traveled and settled in present day Iberia Parish. Broussard did everything he could to support the project, from contacting and talking with land owners about permission to do archaeological survey, to bringing the student assistants cold drinks and good humor on unbearably hot summer days.

"We realize there are many causes that need your support as well, but this is your formal invitation to join us as we celebrate Mayor Al’s memory and support his love for Loreauville and the New Acadia Project," said Ashlie Boutte, event coordinator. "There are various ways to show your support, including sponsorships, participating in the run, in-kind donations, silent auction donations and volunteering."
