DEAR CAREER COACH
Help! I’m looking at resume templates and can’t decide on the best layout to use.

Please, please don’t use a template! They don’t work well with online applications and can be very tricky to edit. Current best practice tips for structuring your resume include:

1) Target your resume for each position you apply to, making it very clear why you would be a great match.
2) Keep your layout simple, using clear headings for the different sections. 
3) Leave out an objective; replace it with a short summary paragraph that highlights your strengths.
4) Organize your experience in reverse chronological order, with your most recent job listed first.
5) Write as tightly as possible in digestible “chunks” that keep your resume easy to scan by busy readers.
6) Use descriptive verbs that showcase your accomplishments.

When was the last time you updated your resume? Don’t wait until you spot your dream job and need to apply by ... yesterday! Maintain a running list of your accomplishments and any new skills you’ve learned. Save that with your performance reviews and schedule time to refresh your resume twice a year. If you’re super motivated, you can spend just half an hour a month to keep it current and be ready for whatever opportunities come your way.

Did you know? More and more employees view working hybrid or remotely as the new expectation in the workplace, as they are seeing positive impact related to productivity, work product, and work/life balance. According to the We Work Remotely | The State of Remote Work Quarterly Report, 52% of employees surveyed would pick to work from home. Owl Labs reported that 23% of full-time employees would take a 10 % pay cut to work a hybrid schedule and 77% surveyed said that they would be happier working from home after the pandemic.
