National Elephant Appreciation Day is September 22! It’s time to celebrate the seven elephants we care for at PAWS’ ARK 2000 sanctuary who were rescued or retired from zoos and circuses.
Get to know our elephants!
African elephants
-
Lulu is the oldest African elephant in North America at 57 years old.
-
Toka is the most identifiable African elephant at PAWS due to her long tusks.
-
Thika is the only captive born African elephant at PAWS.
-
Mara is the elephant who has been with PAWS the longest – 33 years!
Asian elephants
-
Gypsy, at age 56, is among the oldest Asian elephants in North America.
-
Prince loves to nap on the hillside of his habitat.
-
Nicholas emits a contented purr-like sound during his Protected Contact training sessions.
Thanks to your support these elephants roam as they please in large natural habitats. Amid rolling hills dotted with shady oak trees they forage for fresh vegetation, dust themselves, explore, and splash in self-made mud wallows.
