Dear friends,
What comes to mind when you think of serving the church? For me, I immediately hear the powerful melody of the hymn based on Isaiah 6:8, “Here I am, Lord. Send me!” Isaiah is a willing servant, responding to the call of God (who, let’s be honest, could have just made him do God’s bidding). Instead, God asks him. Gives Isaiah a choice. And Isaiah responds out of love and humility.
The image I always associate with service is Jesus washing the feet of his disciples. Our most expansive and powerful God, made flesh, stooping down to cleanse the feet (that I can only imagine were rough!) of his friends.
As he does this, he tells them in John 13:14-15, “So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have set you an example that you also should do as I have done to you.”
Every time I interact with our church, be it through fellowship, volunteer opportunities, or leadership, I’m filled with a sense that I’m contributing to something so much bigger than myself.
Friends, “The Church” was created out of the disciple's love for Christ, the driving force behind their work for and with one another. Westminster has been built and sustained in this same manner, and we continue to need folks with the willingness of Isaiah and the humility and love of Christ to be the feet washers. To say, “Here I am, Lord.”
Are you hearing that call? Do you see folks around you that are already living that out? Our nominating committee will be meeting soon and would be so grateful for recommendations for people that can help carry out the work of our church on the Endowment Committee and as Elders and Deacons. If you feel so moved, or if you feel called to bring someone else’s name forward, please reach out.
