“How can we help you?” This greeting serves as a welcome beacon of hope and of support for everyone who steps foot inside the International Institute of St. Louis. Somewhere, someone said we can help. Whether someone is arriving from Burundi, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Tanzania, Colombia, Ukraine or beyond, now that they are here, they all are welcome.
In 2022, while the refugee resettlement program was still receiving many arrivals from Afghanistan and other countries, there was a large population arriving from Ukraine through the Uniting for Ukraine program where individuals and families were arriving in St. Louis through the assistance of private sponsorship. Once here, many were told, “Go to the International Institute. They can help you.”
Привіт - Hello - Bonjour - Hujambo
Many Ukrainians coming through the doors were not familiar with the organization, or what services were available to them. Access and enrollment into English language classes provided a lifeline in their new home. Additional critical services included health and mental health services, assistance accessing and understanding benefits, employment assistance, immigration services, intensive case management, and housing and utility assistance. Over 350 Ukrainians sought out help through the International Institute last year—and we are ready to welcome even more.
With your financial support on Give STL Day, ensure we continue to provide these vital services to our newest neighbors. Donate to an organization you know, one you may not, and one you would like to learn more about.
