We're recruiting the next class of ASMS students!
According to a 2021 report from the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama, mirroring a national decline that cuts across economic, demographic, and gender groups of students, the average ACT scores for Alabama public high school graduates in the class of 2020 declined to a level lower than it was five years ago. For both Alabama and the nation, this marks three straight years of decline. Remarkably, ASMS graduates during this period continued to average a score 12 points higher than the Alabama average and 10 points above the national average.

With the start of ASMS’s 2022-2023 admissions application period, it’s important to reflect on how as an institution the Alabama School of Math and Science has always stayed true to its mission of offering an unmatched educational experience for students throughout Alabama that, year after year, places our graduates academically amongst the top students in the state, and prepares them for collegiate life like no other high school in Alabama.

From September 1 to February 15, 2022, ASMS will be recruiting current 9th and 10th graders who have a desire to work hard and make the most of the opportunity to receive a FREE STEM-based education. An education that prepares them to excel not only academically---but in life. An education that helps set them on a trajectory to become leaders and innovators, contributing not only to their career field but to their community, state, and beyond.

To be successful in this year’s recruitment period will require a robust and dynamic admissions effort! This includes conducting 24 Information Meetings throughout the state in October, holding ASMS Days on November 13, and December 4, hosting several online Informational Meetings, having a vigorous advertising strategy----but most importantly----the assistance of every ASMS community member to ensure every eligible student and their parent/guardian in Alabama knows about the outstanding educational and residential experience that awaits at ASMS!

Mrs. Lizzie Martin and I look forward to the entire ASMS family working collectively to making this one of our best recruitment periods ever!

Mr. Ken Robinson
Director of Admissions and Outreach

This Week in Marine Bio!
Today in Marine Biology with Dr. Ortell, students reviewed all of the morphological and behavioral characteristics they had learned about marine fishes (sharks and bony fish included). They were tasked with taking the 14 different characteristics (body shape, locomotion, coloration, osmoregulation etc) and creating the "perfect fish" (this did not have to be a real-life fish).

The teams started creating and ended up with two pretty amazing and interesting fish; the giant eel-shark of the future that has pharyngeal jaws and can create electricity via electrocytes, and the very dragon-like, ancient ray-octopus-eel that has a nematocyst harpoon tongue and suction cup covered tail. Dr. Ortell said it was a blast watching them design an organism by applying all of their knowledge and using all of the terminology correctly.

Check out the final drawings (complete with the notes about the eel-shark's ability to do physics!)!
A Special Campus Visitor

Thanks so much to Representative Tracy Estes for stopping by ASMS! He represents the 17th District in the AL House of Representatives which includes Lamar County, Marion County, and Winston County. Yesterday he had a chance to take a photo with two of our students who are from his area and attend ASMS — Annabeth and Mary Kate Sudduth.

"I was given the opportunity to meet the administrative team and came away very impressed with everything the school has to offer students from across the state."
-- Representative Estes
