THE SHORT REPORT

Hi everyone!

June is Pride month. This is an opportunity to celebrate diversity and inclusion in our community. The annual Halifax Pride Festival will take place next month: July 14-24, 2022. The Halifax Pride Parade will take place on Saturday, July 16, 2022 starting at 12pm noon.

NS Health & IWK Pride Network

Nova Scotia Health’s initiative, prideHealth, works to improve access to safe, coordinated, and comprehensive primary healthcare for people who are part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

If you would like to participate in the Pride Parade or Pride Week events in July, please email Garry Dart, prideHealth Coordinator at [email protected] by Friday, June 17. Details are included in the newsletter. To learn more about prideHealth, or connect with the team, email: [email protected] or visit: www.prideHealth.ca

We still have a lot of work to do for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility (EDIA) in our department. Our EDI committee has been busy. For us to truly address diversity and inclusion an important step is to better understand the diversity in our own department. Without this information it is difficult to know where our gaps are and what we need to advocate for and support. Our EDI committee has developed a diversity survey, expanding on the Dalhousie “be counted” survey and will be sending it out to physicians, researchers and administrative staff over the summer. I am encouraging all of you to take the time to complete this survey so we can move forward with as much information as possible.

Graduation cap with certificate

Congratulations to the Residents and Fellows who are completing their training this year. Also, a big shout out to the department members who have been recognized with formal awards (see various articles below). We have so much talent in our Department to celebrate. I invite all of you to join us on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 from 8:00 – 9:00 am for the DoM Awards Extravaganza – Third Edition on Zoom when we will recognize our Residents, Fellows and achievements of DoM physician and staff members. The Zoom link and details are included below. A special edition awards newsletter will be shared with everyone after the event.

It is important for us all to take a break this summer. Make sure you are planning some time away from work and finding opportunities to slow down a bit. In that spirit we’re taking a summer break for the newsletter in July and will see you back in August. Have a great summer!

Take care, everyone!

Care Coordination Centre (C3) Goes Live on June 29

The Care Coordination Centre (C3) will officially go live on June 29, 2022, at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. C3 will be located in the current space of the Executive Offices at the Halifax Infirmary site, on the second floor of the Summer Street entrance.

The C3 will improve how the organization coordinates the movement of patients throughout their healthcare journey. It will use artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, and patient status to provide a real-time view of access to care, patient flow, and health system resources to support decision-making. It will also generate actionable insights to drive continuous improvements in how healthcare is delivered to improve the quality of patient care. The C3 will support teams to identify issues and find solutions together, using real-time data. This will translate into improved patient access and flow, efficient bed management and discharge planning, better scheduling of staff, and more collaboration across health zones across the province.

The first Tile to go live is the Capacity Expeditor Tile, with the remaining five Tiles being implemented at the QEII in this fiscal year.

To stay up to date with the launch and progress of C3, please visit the C3 Intranet here: https://intra.nshealth.ca/C3/SitePages/Home.aspx

Faculty of Medicine Wellness Survey

The Faculty of Medicine has been developing a framework around wellness for all faculty, which began with welcoming our Assistant Dean of Wellness, Dr. Angela Cooper. Engaging wellness leads from clinical departments and divisions, as well as laying a new foundation in wellness with our basic science faculty, has been no small task and has included the development of faculty wellness leaders, a peer mentoring program and scholarly activity, and promoting bespoke wellness educational sessions.

As part of this engagement, Dr. Cooper has led the development of our first Faculty of Medicine Wellness Survey, aimed at providing crucial information forming the foundation of our wellness strategy. In completing the survey, you will not only get a deeper sense of your own levels of stress and burnout along with recommendations of support, but you will also contribute to a wider understanding of our clinical faculty's wellness needs across the Maritime Provinces.

With information obtained from responses, we can begin to target the systemic, cultural, and individual factors that you identify as contributors to stress and burnout. As such, I strongly encourage you to use the link below and take the time needed to complete this survey and help us move forward in our wellness efforts.
