Hello colleagues, customers and friends,
A friend recently celebrated a milestone birthday and I had the stunning realization that her 75 years represented 33% of the last 250 years since our country was founded in 1776. WOW, that is amazing.
So much happens in a lifetime! History is lived through each of us and at a distance, what once seemed ordinary can seem extraordinary now, e.g., "You mean to tell me telephones used to have cords?"
History may be marked with dates, but in truth it's a collection of stories, whether across the years of a country or a life. A Father's Day piece in the New York Times offered 25 out-of-the ordinary questions to trigger a story from a dad. A few:
- When you were growing up what was your idea of what a dad should be like?
- What good things from your childhood did you hope to pass on to me? What did you hope to spare me?
- What is something you used to believe strongly, but have since changed your mind about?
History is a only a question away, and when questions are driven by curiousity and love, the rewards are priceless. It's up to you to ask for the stories - and also up to you to find ways to share your own.
In the spirit of legacy,
Susan
