Notes from the editor: I Had a Nightmare
The excitement of seeing a new, full arts season ahead of us this fall has to be like that feeling a kid gets when he knows something he's been wishing for will soon be his. A trip to Disney, an hour of freedom in an ice cream shop, whatever it is youngsters (or adults) long for these days. OK. You can keep Disney but give me an hour with a spoon and a freezer case of homemade ice cream. Please.
My nightmare, as I read about the resurgent COVID strains, is the possibility of a forced return to the early days of the pandemic. I won't nag anyone but I will remind people of what we lost in that year and a half and how important it is to do what we have to to make sure it doesn't wipe out the plans our arts organizations and artists have for the future.
End of the somewhat gentle nag.

They're Celebrating at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre
The news that came in from the Maltz Jupiter Theatre this week couldn't have been more welcome or exciting! Theatre lovers been waiting for the total remodeling and expansion program to be finished — you know, the one that kept the Maltz team way beyond busy during the pandemic. That $36 million expansion.
Andrew Kato, producing artistic director and chief executive, said the word that best described the feeling he had when he signed off on the press release was "relieved!"
The 2021/22 season officially opens with a three-week, open-air run of the smash Broadway hit Jersey Boys that will fill the Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium January 11-30, followed by I Hate Hamlet at the Benjamin School February 8-20. Then the new theatre itself will open its doors with "the high-energy, dance-filled musical Sweet Charity" on the new, Broadway-scale stage February 19-March 9, and a four-week run of the Tony®-nominated Broadway sensation Dirty Rotten Scoundrels March 22 – April 10.
Kato calls the first two shows "Maltz Without Walls, because we are doing just that." The pandemic wasn't the only consideration in planning the season to begin al fresco. "We also have construction deadlines to consider, so – even though the project is expected to be delivered on January 3 – it eases the pressure of reentering the building while mounting a show."
Still, there are major elements to contemplate when considering a baseball stadium as a venue for a Broadway show, Kato said, because "baseball stadiums are built for baseball. We’ve made plans to add lighting, sound, power with additional generators, and locker rooms that will be adapted to become dressing rooms." And then there are the normal amenities theatre patrons expect and a rain policy to be established. "Luckily, January brings cooler weather with fewer chances of rain, so it should be the perfect time of year to attend an open-air production."
Mike Bauer, general manager of Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium, said "the opportunity to host the Theatre’s production of Jersey Boys is a thrilling chance to marry two of America’s favorite pastimes. ... This will be an experience that fans won’t soon forget.”
In addition to the main lineup, there will be music: Live at the Garden: The Music of Billy Joel; The McCartney Years; Top of the World: A Carpenters Tribute; Destination Motown, featuring the Sensational Soul Cruisers; Best of the Eagles; Tribute to Journey: Odyssey Road; the Elton John tribute Yellow Brick Road; and The Prince Project. Look for several major fund-raising events in March and April to benefit the theatre. And looking ahead: "Not only will we be 100 percent back for the entire 2022/23 season," Kato said, "but we are in the process of planning summer camps for our arts students in the spring and summer 2022."

Brevard Artist Judy Edwards
Judy Edwards and I first crossed paths many years ago on a birdwatching day tour — Stickmarsh, maybe? I haven't seen her since then but I remembered the name when a press release arrived from her for Fifth Avenue Art Gallery in Melbourne.
A Staten Island native, Edwards has lived in Viera for the last 20 years after stops in Philadelphia, Honolulu, and Portsmouth, Rhode Island. She's a graduate of SUNY college of New York and went on to Temple University graduate school, "but didn't finish because I had the opportunity to live in Honolulu." While there, she studied drawing with James Koga, and later, back on the mainland, oils with Ted Tihansky and Don Stone.
It was in Stone's plein aire painting classes that she developed the confidence to pursue art professionally. Edwards relocated to Florida after taking a one year trip around the world painting en plein aire with her 13-year-old daughter, followed by a one woman show in Newport, Rhode Island. Painting landscapes had lost its appeal for Edwards by that time but a happy accident directed her toward a new passion, encaustics.
Edwards explained, "I was looking for a class in wax emulsion used by my favorite artist, Arthur Dove. I searched the whole USA and then saw Leslie (Neumann) teaching wax encaustic at Ringling College (of Art & Design.) it sounded somewhat similar. So I signed up. When I got there, Leslie told me no one uses wax emulsion as it was too toxic. ‘You are here, so why don’t you learn encaustic’. The rest is history." She added cold wax and oil paints to her portfolio with classes with Lisa Pressman, also at Ringling, and R&F Paints.
It wasn't until she turned 40 that Edwards knew art would play a large part in her life. "I realized it was something I had always wanted to do, and I committed to it."
In her Viera home, she has "a brand new, beautiful studio with natural light and more than sufficient work space." It was built just for the artist, "eliminating a linen closet in the guest bathroom, blowing through that wall and adding on to our house. It was a chore being built but It is now the nicest room in our house. ... I am in there most every day and put the creative process as a priority. there is nothing I would rather do." The only thing missing is a hammock!
But what artist doesn't have a wish list? "If I had a bigger studio I would love to have a press," Edwards said, "but I am able to do encaustic monotypes without one."
A memory that stands out for Edwards happened in Pai, Northern Thailand, on her 1998 trip. "Pai was a very small town in the mountains, near the Myanmar border. In the middle of the town was a hat shop I really wanted to paint," but it took some convincing by the artist's daughter to get her to set up her easel and paint. "She basically gave me a talking to, called me a chicken, and told me I'd live to regret it (if I didn't go.)"
Another one she won't forget is a phone call from the Fifth Avenue Art Gallery telling her she had "sold the wall." She had no idea what that meant. "I did what? After a few tries I finally understood, it meant I sold all 7 paintings on my wall in the gallery!"
Free-time activities for Edwards that don't involve time in her studio are baking sourdough bread, gardening, and taking her therapy dog, Buddy, to visit the elderly.
Her work is available to view and purchase at Fifth Avenue Art Gallery in Eau Gallie and on her website.

Space Coast Symphony Orchestra Traditions
The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra's fun-loving artistic director and conductor knows how to grab readers' attention. The graphics Aaron Collins and his team come up with for performances of Olympics-themed music are timeless.
How do you keep a longstanding tradition fresh for the musicians as well as the audience?
With the Olympics theme, featured every four years when a pandemic doesn't force cancellation, you add some new works and bring back old favorites. "There are some works that are specifically tied to or written for the Games, including several of John Williams’ works like Summon the Heroes and Olympic Fanfare and Theme," Collins said. "We will revisit Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Sibelius’ Finlandia, and Suk’s Towards a New Life." New for this series are the World Premiere of Dan Perttu‘s The Phoenix and Michael Torke’s Javelin. Tenor Bryan Hayes will sing several works with the orchestra. "This is a multimedia concert featuring incredible clips from the Olympics and it is paired with equally exciting music."
Summon the Heroes: Music of the Olympics is at The Scott Center at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy August 7, 7 p.m., and Vero Beach High School PAC Aug. 8, 3 p.m.
