Message from the President

The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) reported on Monday: "Manufacturing production declined 0.5 percent in September, falling for the sixth time year to date, but following a gain of 0.6 percent in August. The latest decrease was led by a sharp decline in motor vehicles and parts production, down 4.2 percent, which was likely negatively impacted by the strike at General Motors. (A
tentative deal
was reached last week.) Excluding motor vehicles and parts, manufacturing production fell 0.2 percent in September."

Minimum Wage Increases Unintended Impact
|
|
Minimum wage is a hot button issue across the country and appears to be getting hotter in Delaware. In 2014, the Delaware General Assembly passed a minimum wage increase from $7.75 to $9.25. While we have not yet seen the full effects of this bill – $9.25 went into effect on Oct. 1, 2019 – this past General Assembly saw the introduction of Senate Bill 105, an act to increase the minimum wage in Delaware to $15 by 2024. The bill ended in the Finance Committee during this legislative session but remains live during the next legislative session. Understanding the impact a bill like Senate Bill 105 would have across Delaware industries is therefore vital for Delaware business owners, customers and lawmakers.

Monthly Labor Review - September 2019
|
For the third consecutive month, Delaware’s unemployment rate has risen one-tenth of a point. The unemployment rate for September is 3.5 percent and is equal to where it was at the beginning of the year in January. Delaware’s unemployment rate for September is also the same as the US rate, which ends a streak of 15 consecutive months of Delaware’s unemployment rate being below the US. While there are 600 more unemployed Delaware residents in September than there were in August, the number of unemployed is 200 less than a year ago.
