A Message from Assistant Principal Joye Phipps

Dear Dogwood Families,
Ms. Phipps
Welcome back to school!  I am honored to have the opportunity to briefly introduce myself.  My name is Joye Phipps, and I am over the moon excited about joining th e Dogwood admin as the new Assistant Principal.  I believe DES is such an amazing place for students because of our wonderful teachers and staff. I look forward to continuing to support and work with them as we grow our students into world-changers.
Just a little bit about me and my life outside of Dogwood- I live in Bartlett with my husband Chris and our daughter Bess.  We stay busy with her sports and preschool life in general.  In my free time, I enjoy the theatre, reading, and traveling.
I am a University of Memphis graduate and have been working in the Germantown Municipal School District for the past 17 years.  My professional experience has included teaching at Houston Middle for fourteen years and supporting the development of the RTI program at Dogwood for the past three.
I look forward to meeting you. I NNOVATE, CHALLENGE, and EMPOWER defines the "The Dolphin Way" here at Dogwood. You can be assured that I will uphold these values personally, as your new Assistant Principal.
Joye Phipps
Assistant Principal

Join the Dogwood Team for the St. Jude Walk/Run!

GMSD is excited to be a flagship sponsor of the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer this year! Each school has a team participating in the event and we want you to join our Dogwood team! The race will be Saturday, September 22 at 9am. The 5K will start on A.W. Willis and will end on the St. Jude campus in a festival. Come join the fun!

Did you know?
  • The average donation to St.Jude is $10
  • St. Jude does not have a patient billing department.
  • Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent when the hospital opened in 1962 to more than 80 percent today.
  • St. Jude treats about 8,500 children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases each year. The treatments for pediatric cancer can last up to three years or more and cost on average $425,000 including housing, travel and food. YET NO FAMILY RECEIVES A BILL!
  • The hospital's global outreach efforts transfer the progress achieved in the treatment of childhood cancer in developed countries to those with limited resources. St. Jude has 24 official partner sites in 17 countries in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, South America, the Eastern Mediterranean region and Asia with whom St. Jude freely share research and protocols.
Click here to Join the Dogwood Team   - Be sure you select the Dogwood Team from the list of schools.

In addition to participating in the race, you can also join GMSD fundraising efforts by purchasing a t-shirt to wear at the race (and in the days leading up to the race). There will be a school day where students will wear their shirts as well. We have great shirt options from Agape North including regular cotton, soft cotton and dri-fit. Orders are due August 17.  Click here to order your t-shirt

Help GMSD and Dogwood make an impact for the families at St. Jude!

A Message from our Counselors

New Dogwood Parents:

We are so excited to have your child as a part of our Dogwood family.  Hopefully, the first few days have been a pleasure. Additional opportunities are available for your child to become more familiar with the school environment and offer support during this transition.  This is also a great way for your child to connect with other new students in a smaller setting. New student groups will be starting within the next two weeks meeting once a week for 30 minutes. These sessions will last approximately four weeks.

Please contact Brandi Fitchpatric or Nikole Hamlett, school counselors at 752-7946 Brandi.Fitchpatric@gmsdk12.org or Nikole.Hamlett@gmsdk12.org for additional information.

Dogwood Fun Run

Our students have spoken! They have asked for a new playground and shade to play under.

This year, Dogwood has a goal to raise $50,000 toward the new playground with shade!

By partnering with Boosterthon, our students will participate in a two-week, fitness-based fundraiser where they'll learn essential character traits through this year's theme: Mindspark Mystery Lab.

In the past, what we raised through Booserthon allowed us to update our technology including a 70" mobile tv, two carts of 25+ devices per grade level, and an Apple TV for each classroom!

We are so thankful for this amazing community. Please help us reach our goal this year by connecting with sponsors.
  • Pledging Opens - August 21st
  • Pep Rally - August 28th
  • Fun Run - September 7th (Save the Date, You're Invited!!)

We will be sharing more information over the next few weeks!

Fifth Grade Orchestra

An Orchestra parent meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 14th at 5pm in the  Farmington Elementary  Cafeteria

Questions such as what is orchestra, where do we rent, what supplies to buy, etc. will be answered.

Orchestra is for 5th graders only.  A few spots are still available. The 5th grade teachers and Mr. Simons have orchestra applications.

Email Mr. Short with any questions.  stephen.short@gmsdk12.org

Dogwood Cross Country

Dogwood Cross Country is recruiting beginner to advanced runners--grades 3-5--for the 2018 fall season. The Dogwood Cross Country team will participate in the  Memphis Youth Athletic League(MYA) where we will run in mostly one-mile races against other elementary schools Shelby Farms during September and October. We also give kids the option to participate with us in a few local 5K races as well.

Dogwood Cross Country registration is now officially open on MySchoolBucks. Click here to register. The cost is $65. Please register your child for the team by Wednesday, August 15th so we can get our uniforms in on time for the first cross country meet that takes place on August 24th.

Runners are required to order a uniform top, but all other merchandise is optional. Our uniforms will have a slightly different style and there will be writing on the back of the uniform to help us identify our team better. Otherwise the color and front logo on the uniform will be the same so it is okay for kids to wear their uniforms from last year. Other merchandise that can be ordered include a hoodie, short sleeve tech shirt, shorts and duffel bag.

Practices in the fall will tentatively be on Thursday mornings at 7:30 a.m. at Dogwood Park, on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm. at Cameron Brown Park, and on Saturday mornings at 8:00 a.m. at Shelby Farms. Practice is strongly encouraged, but, it is not necessary to be at every practice to be part of our team. We realize that your children may have other commitments, and we are flexible. Parents are always welcome and encouraged to run with us at practice and to help supervise.

Teacher Sponsors: Linda Fredrick and Cassidy Fernandez
Coach: Stacey Schwarzmann
