ADVOCACY UPDATE

General Assembly Wrap-Up: March 19, 2024

The Chamber had a significant impact on legislation throughout the duration of this year’s Virginia General Assembly deliberations. Marking its last day on March 9th, Chamber Vice President of Government Relations, Nick Clemente, advocated on crucial Regional issues of importance to business and all employers. While the General Assembly is adjourned for 2024, we will continue to work hard to implement strategies to support our community throughout the Region.

With a total of 2,200 bills sent to Governor Glenn Youngkin’s desk in the past 60 days, Nick briefed Chamber members with urgent updates on legislation that directly impacted business, education institutions, and communities. In his weekly emailed summaries and during our Member Advocacy Connector discussions, that he hosted every Friday morning, Nick shared his valuable insights from his on-the-ground presence in Richmond. He directly engaged on budget amendments that the Chamber and members believe are most important. These amendments include: a potential Potomac Yard Entertainment District, a sustainable future for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), and measures impacting the Virginia Community College System (VCCS)

Nick’s weekly summaries highlighted the Chamber’s advocacy on a range of issues including Governor Youngkin’s proposed package deal to cut income tax rates; Medicaid funding for fiscal year 2025; mental health funding; and direct aid to school districts.

The Chamber’s commitment to creating a thriving Region and informing our community, doesn’t stop now. Governor Youngkin has until April 8th to sign, veto, or amend bills that passed in the House and Senate; therefore, many new updates are still yet to come from Nick and the Chamber. Members are encouraged to keep a lookout for The Bulletin, an exclusive members-only news outlet to spread awareness on pressing legislative updates, scheduled to begin next week. In addition, members may also reach out to Nick regarding any questions, comments, or concerns. He can be reached at nclemente@novachamber.org.
