WORKFORCE UPDATE

Does generational diversity within your organization impact your mental wellness approach?

Editor's note: Mental health and its impact on our Region's employee recruitment and retention has become a driving topic within our membership's workforce. On March 28th, the Chamber will host Wellness in the Workforce Part I: Mental Health’s Impact. This groundbreaking event will address mental health's role within the business community and cover approaches today's leaders can take to benefit their employees--and the bottom line.

We've asked this event's distinguished panelists about one aspect of the workforce mental health discussion: generational diversity. From a younger generation's "minimal Mondays" to an older generation's age-related demands, it's clear that there is diversity within mental health wellness. Our experts weigh in below.

"It is expected that by 2025, Generation Z will make up 27% of the workforce. As we move forward, it is important to recognize that different generations may have varying perspectives and beliefs related to mental health and well-being. To address the unique needs of all generations in the workplace, it is more important than ever for employers to provide a wide range of care options so employees have choice and flexibility."

Sandra Shaklan LCSW-C

Innovation Lead, Cigna Health Care

"Early career (employees) have different wants, needs, expectations, and goals than their middle and late career colleagues. Organizations should thus develop a two-tiered approach to mental health wellness and support given these different populations. A one size fits all approach does not provide the best support."

Dr. Joseph Tasosa

Chief of Psychiatry, Kaiser Permanente

"We do not believe in 'one size fits all' regarding how organizations can best care for the mental health needs of their employees. All aspects of a diverse, multigenerational workforce should be considered when determining what mental health programs and services should be offered in order to meet the differing and specific needs of all employees and their families. We have an organizational mental health framework that, rather than providing one or two services for all, provides a buffet of full spectrum options where employees can choose the programs and services that best meet their specific mental health needs."

Megan Hodge

Human Resources Manager, Employee Well-Being, Mayo Clinic

"Given that our workforce encompasses a diverse group of people of all ages, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds, we have to be mindful in our approach not only to provide general support, but tailor our treatment to that individual's needs. As organizations continue to invest in human capital, it is fundamental that we provide a range of mental health services that take into consideration the needs of a generational workforce on a case-by-case basis."

Dr. Cessar Scott

Behavioral Health Physician, Virginia Health Institute

Obesity is a chronic, relapsing, and progressive disease that affects over 30% of Virginia's adult population and continues to grow in prevalence. It acts as a driver for a multitude of other serious health conditions and has been linked to $147 billion dollars in annual medical costs within the US alone. Despite these staggering numbers and the disease's impact on both our population and businesses, comprehensive care for obesity faces barriers in the form of stigma, bias, perception, and access to care.

During this event, our Keynote, Lydia Wang, Medical Account Associate Director, Novo Nordisk, and our panel of experts will discuss what role organizations can play to support this serious, complex, and chronic condition with a profoundly negative impact on health and quality of life.
