Bipartisanship: Working Together to Build a Better Virginia

The Chamber recently spoke with Larry Roberts, Director of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia, who offered the following thoughts on the benefits of bipartisanship to Virginia government and its business community. The Sorensen Institute and the Chamber have formed an Advancing Civics partnership to promote bipartisanship and civil discourse as means toward effective public leadership. Each year, the Chamber publishes its Legislative Agenda, representing the policy priorities of the Region's business community for the upcoming Virginia General Assembly session and beyond.


The agenda is not premised on which party is in power in Richmond and, very often in recent decades, neither party has a “trifecta” of controlling the Senate of Virginia, House of Delegates, and Governor’s office.


The result is a need to work effectively with both Republicans and Democrats to ensure passage of key Chamber priorities. One result is that the Chamber’s PAC – NOVABIZPAC – has a track record of endorsing candidates from both parties.

At the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership, we do not take issue positions and we do not endorse candidates. But we share an interest with the Chamber in bipartisanship, sound public policy processes, and public leaders who value trust, civil dialogue, respect, and ethical governance.



Virginia does better when public leaders find ways to work together across partisan, regional, and other divides to make sure that Virginia is a national leader in areas such as governing, business climate, economic development, education, health care, transportation, public safety, and protecting our environment

Governor Glenn Youngkin Meets With President of Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen to establish a Virginia-Taiwan Trade Office

As part of his Asia tour, Governor Youngkin was in Taiwan last week to help establish a Virginia-Taiwan Trade Office in Taiwan to boost economic ties with the nation. “As a former business leader, I appreciate the commitment to excellence that Taiwan demonstrates across sectors. They are an important trading partner and model of prosperity for nations across the globe,” said Youngkin. This will be the Commonwealth’s fourth international office; others are in Japan, South Korea and Germany. Youngkin is also scheduled to visit Japan and South Korea during his Asian trip. More information can be found here.

The Greater Washington Apprentice Network (GWAN) brings together employers, academic institutions, public and private sectors. Employers gain access to best practices from organizational peers, sources of prospective apprentice candidates, support services, academic institutions, and training resources. The GWAN meets on the 1st Tuesday of each month for an Employer Briefing.

With a mission to continue bipartisan action, the Chamber and UVA’s The Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership have come together to advance the pro-business policies that have continuously made Virginia one of the best states to do business. This partnership, called Advancing Civics, will host its first event on May 10th with Senators Dick Saslaw (D-Fairfax)and Emmett Hanger (R-Augusta) as speakers and Moderated by Julie Carey, Northern Virginia Bureau Chief for News4.


These two Senators, who have worked together to keep Virginia a business-friendly state and ensure investments that advance Virginia’s economy: in education, transportation, workforce development, and economic development, will share:
