WORKFORCE UPDATE

Regional workforce: how will hiring practices change in the near future?

What does the future hold for our Region's workforce? What trends are Regional business leaders seeing emerge through their hiring and recruiting efforts? As the Greater Washington Region's business center, Northern Virginia--with the Chamber at its helm--has led the way in identifying and addressing workforce issues impacting employers and future growth.

On behalf of our members, the Chamber has made workforce issues a top priority and a central theme within our daily work. Partnering with industry elites, we have undertaken programs and groundbreaking research to best prepare and support our members for the challenges they face today and for what lies ahead. One such research is the annual Northern Virginia Workforce Index, conducted in collaboration with the Northern Virginia Community College and Northern Virginia Chamber Foundation.

Data found through the most recent Index's research shows potential opportunities within hiring trends that could help assuage our Region's current recruiting woes. It is by looking at the data and current employer practices that patterns and solutions begin to emerge. For example, 92% of Regional employers cited word-of-mouth/employee referrals as a "most common hiring source," whereas only 15% currently recruit through apprenticeships, despite data showing apprenticeship programs' training advantage and link to increased employee loyalty and retention rates amongst participants. Barriers to hiring, education levels, remote work, and employee retention were also addressed in the research.

Whatever the coming years hold in store, detailed and actionable intelligence on local labor market conditions, especially employer workforce needs, remains a vital component of understanding and planning for the future. The Chamber understands the need for ongoing, actionable data and will continue its efforts on behalf of our membership and our Region.
