The Chamber's Policy Committee is Guiding Northern Virginia’s Future

Representing more than 500,000 employees from every major industry sector, the Chamber’s diverse business policy initiatives converge upon one goal: a vibrant Regional economy. Our advocacy work has been so impactful that the Chamber is a recognized and respected voice locally, in Richmond, and on Capitol Hill. Working alongside the Chamber's Nick Clemente, Vice President, Government Relations, is the Chamber's Policy Committee, a guiding force comprised of Chamber members with an interest in policy work. This Committee convenes each fall to develop the Chamber's Legislative Agenda and meets with key elected officials throughout the year.

The Committee is currently wrapping up the Chamber's 2024 Legislative Agenda, having begun its work on September 13th with the upcoming General Assembly as its target. This year's Legislative Agenda will be more streamlined, resulting in a usable, broad document that could inform the efforts of Chamber Government Affairs staff in the upcoming session and for the foreseeable future.

In addition, this year's Committee changed their weekly meetings from a presentation/lecture format to an interactive discussion where all members have their voice heard. To date over sixty different member companies and organizations have participated in our meetings on Health Care, Energy, Transportation, Education and Workforce.

Today's 3PM meeting will be a conversation on Taxes, Regulation and Economic Competitiveness. We will wrap up on Wednesday the 18th at 3PM with Affordable Housing and DE&I. If you would like to join in on these calls, please contact Nick Clemente at nclemente@novachamber.org or Carmen Sevilla at csevilla@novachamber.org.

The Northern Virginia Workforce Index, an annual longitudinal study developed in partnership between the Chamber and Northern Virginia Community College, demystifies our Region's workforce trends with real, actionable data. This is an opportunity for you to benchmark yourself against your peers and help our Region--and your own organization--respond to the tight labor market. Through data collected via this survey, we will compile our annual report, providing our community's leadership with critical information on hiring, retention, and professional development trends among employers in the Region.

Add your insight to this 10-minute survey here. It should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. The third annual Northern Virginia Workforce Index Report will be released at the Annual Economic Outlook Conference on January 30, 2024. Details to come.

C-Suite Roundtable By Invitation, Members-Only

October 24th

Our Region's workforce woes have become a common theme within our business community. Finding novel solutions to sourcing, training, and retaining new employees has become our modern day leadership challenge.

Join us for our October 24th C-Suite Roundtable where speakers Radha Muthiah, CEO, Capital Area Food Bank; Dr. Anne Kress, President, Northern Virginia Community College; and Cecilia Hodges, Regional President, Greater Washington and Virginia, M&T Bank, will discuss how their novel pilot program is bundling access to food, education, and the opportunity to interview for living wage jobs to improve students' lives... Through their program, students pursuing higher education receive assistance to help them balance rising living costs and priorities that have traditionally derailed academic careers. Through this program, graduation rates have improved, resulting in better-qualified candidates.
