REGIONAL UPDATE

What is the greatest transportation challenge facing our Region today?

Next week, the Chamber will host the popular Annual State of Transportation at our office (Thursday, July 27th). This year's theme, Women Driving Transportation, will feature an esteemed speaker panel of elected and industry leaders whose daily work influences our Region's transportation infrastructure, from planning through execution. Their collective expertise on where today's issues lie and the best paths to influence a better Regional transportation future cannot be overstated. We encourage you to join this important and timely discussion next week.

As part of their panel role, we asked our Annual State of Transportation experts, "What is the greatest transportation challenge facing our Region today"? Read their answers below and register for the event here.

Phyliss Randall

Chair of the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority

"In no particular order, these are some of our transportations challenges in Northern Virginia: 1) Not having an interconnected transit system that is seamless from jurisdiction to jurisdiction; 2) a resistance by residents to use public transportation, carpool, slug lines*, etc.; 3) By-right development, especially in more rural parts of our region, that do not require the developer to put forward any road infrastructure to mitigate new homes; and 4) housing that is located closer to major corridors and where jobs are created. Much of that housing needs to be attainable."

(*editor's note: "slugging" is unique to the Washington Region and refers to the practice of picking up additional commuters for free to qualify for HOV lanes. "Slug lines" are designated pickup points.)

Dalia Palchik

Chair of the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission

“Pedestrian safety has been at the forefront of community concerns here in our Region and beyond, and we all need to work together to ensure our streets are safe for everyone.

With the continuous increase in population in our Region, the need for accessible and affordable transportation is vital to Northern Virginia’s growth. We continue to work with our partners at the local, state, and federal levels to invest in multisector improvements to better meet this need.”

Amanda J. Baxter

Sr. Vice President, Virginia Market & Operations, Transurban

"Time is money. Recent impacts to project budgets due to rising costs related to inflation and interest rates have put pressure on schedules during the planning and design phases. Further, more needs to be done in our Region to offset schedule setbacks due to regulatory approvals, changes in leadership, and community alignment."
