A Sneak Peek at the Human Capital at Work Report
Below is a special sneak peek of McKinsey’s Human Capital at Work Report that will be presented by Bryan Hancock, Partner, and Brooke Weddle, Partner, McKinsey & Company at June 14th's 2022 Capital Regional Workforce Summit.

Are companies the new colleges? With university costs growing every year, on-the-job learning is crucial and helps reduce growing inequities across society. But how much do employees really learn on the job and how can employers turn training to their advantage? 

A new report from McKinsey & Company shows how individuals continue to increase the value of their skills and compensation over the course of their careers. Using big data, the report analyzed millions of real-world work histories (using a huge and unique micro data set of completely de-identified professional profiles from the US, Germany, the UK, and India) and tens of thousands of job postings to get a detailed view of the moves people made and the precise mix of skills they added or demonstrated over time.

A central finding is that work experience accounts for roughly half of the average person’s lifetime earnings—and as much as 60-80 percent for people with less education. Making role moves with bigger leaps in new skills is key to boosting incomes and upward mobility. One-quarter to one-third of workers move into higher earning brackets over time, and this upwardly mobile group stands out for making more frequent and bolder role moves.  

With the average worker in our dataset changing roles every 2-4 years and 80 percent of job moves involving people moving to new employers, mobility is a fact of life. Employers will need to embrace it by considering more unconventional external candidates and creating more pathways for employees to advance and rotate internally...

Chamber Attends Bill Signing for VEC Reforms, Family Leave Insurance Bills
Last week, the Chamber was invited by the Youngkin Administration to participate in a bill signing due to our involvement in its passage during the 2022 General Assembly Session. Sen. Barbara Favola and Del. Kathy Byron sponsored legislation that would allow private insurance providers to sell family medical leave policies. This provides small businesses an affordable option to grant family leave for employees without incurring the costs typically associated with such leave.

At the same event, Gov. Youngkin also signed Virginia Employment Commission reform bills, which the Chamber supported. These bills are meant to improve a moribund system that was heavily criticized for failures during the peak of the COVID-related job losses in 2020.

Vaccination Requirement: Upon review of both the CDC guidance on community levels of COVID-19 and its website listings showing our own Northen Virginia counties' positive case percentages, the Chamber has removed its proof of COVID-19 vaccination requirements. Additionally, the Chamber will no longer require masks be worn. You are welcome to wear a mask if that makes you comfortable. 
 
As always, if you are sick or feel you are getting sick, we ask that you please stay home.
 
The Chamber will continue to follow COVID-19 guidance from local health departments and the CDC for in person events.
Greater Washington Apprentice Network - June

The Greater Washington Apprentice Network (GWAN) brings together employers, academic institutions, public and private sectors. Employers gain access to best practices from organizational peers, sources of prospective apprentice candidates, support services, academic institutions, and training resources. The GWAN meets on the first Tuesday of each month for an Employer Briefing.
