CHAMPIONING DEI

Champions For Accountability Event Headlined by Diversity Icon, Dorothy Butler Gilliam

“Northern Virginia is home to nearly 9,000 executives from traditionally underrepresented demographic groups, including women and persons of color. Unfortunately, despite the large and growing size of this population, women and non-white leaders account for just 47 percent of executives, a rate that is well out of proportion with their share of the Northern Virginia workforce (74 percent)."

So begins, the Champions for Accountability research report. Champions for Accountability is an ongoing joint initiative between the Chamber and the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia. Based on data provided by, "Champions," employers in Northern Virginia who are willing to collect, share, and act on data about the demographic composition of their c-suite and board, the resulting report will be unveiled at the upcoming Champions For Diversity event, held September 15th.

The launch event for this important project will be headlined by notable speaker and moderator, Dorothy Butler Gilliam, a journalist, author, social justice advocate, and a trailblazer as the first black woman reporter at The Washington Post. Hosted by MITRE, this event will be an unveiling of the research findings, a moderated discussion of Chief Diversity Officers about DEI within our region, and an introduction of our first Champions receiving their Champions for Accountability Badges.

Ms. Gilliam, who joined The Washington Post in 1961, will share her insights on diversity movements in journalism and lessons that can be applied to contemporary business opportunities to build a more inclusive and diverse workplace and social equity in our culture.

Registration for the September 15th event is open now and all are welcome to attend.
