Advice on Helping Veterans Find Success Within the Business World

“Veterans are special people. Duty, honor, integrity and loyalty are their hallmarks and they bring to each role a sense of leadership and responsibility. Within the business world they exemplify the best of what we want in employees. I tell everyone that when they give veterans a chance, they can’t go wrong.”


So says W. Glenn Yarborough, Jr, a Colonel with the United States Army (retired), President and Chief Executive Officer of WGY & Associates, LLC., and this year’s Distinguished Service Awards Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree. We spoke with Glenn about what it means to be a veteran in business and how we, as employers and colleagues, can best assist those transitioning from the military into the business world.


A 27-year veteran who retired only after a horrible automobile accident left Betsy, his beloved wife of 50 years, with a traumatic brain injury that required dedicated medical care, Glenn is proud of his time as a Colonel in the Army. He entered the military in 1961 at the age of 21 after graduating first from The Citadel and then from the University of South Carolina, where he later earned his MBA. He spent most of his time in the 1st Division, the Big Red One, with seven years in the Cavalry and Armor units in Europe and three years in Vietnam. Later on, he focused his attention on acquisition management and support of Army Infrastructure, skills he used to his advantage when switching to the business world. His last assignment was as Military Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research Development and Acquisition.

Vaccination Requirement: Upon review of both the CDC guidance on community levels of COVID-19 and its website listings showing our own Northen Virginia counties' positive case percentages, the Chamber has removed its proof of COVID-19 vaccination requirements. Additionally, the Chamber will no longer require masks be worn. You are welcome to wear a mask if that makes you comfortable. 
 
As always, if you are sick or feel you are getting sick, we ask that you please stay home.
 
The Chamber will continue to follow COVID-19 guidance from local health departments and the CDC for in person events.

Northern Virginia Workforce Network - August

Are you interested in finding innovative solutions to our region’s workforce challenges? Please join us for the inaugural meeting of the NOVA Workforce Network on August 23rd. The NOVA Workforce Network is an inclusive and collaborative community of workforce professionals and others interested in workforce innovation. The August meeting will feature Jill Kaneff of the Northern Virginia Regional Commission presenting key learnings from the State of the Region report. This important research, published in mid-July, provides details on the state of Northern Virginia’s economic recovery and the economic transformation the region has undergone and will need to be prepared to undergo for the long term because of the impact of COVID-19. All are welcome to attend.

7th Annual Northern Virginia Regional Elected Leaders Summit

The 7th Annual Regional Elected Leaders Summit gives Northern Virginia's business leaders the opportunity to learn about the economic growth of our region and discover how the local jurisdictions in Northern Virginia are working together for the betterment of our regional economy. Leaders of Northern Virginia’s localities will discuss issues including the region's workforce, housing, and transportation network. The Arlington Chamber of Commerce is hosting this summit with premier partner, the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce, and co-hosts, Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, Loudoun Chamber of Commerce, Prince William Chamber of Commerce, and Northern Virginia Regional Commission.

The Chamber and the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia have partnered together to create the Northern Virginia Champions for Accountability, a DEI research project. Our inaugural event will cover DEI in our region, including a reveal of key learnings from this important regional DEI research followed by a dynamic panel discussion with the members of the Champions for Accountability Task Force, comprised of Chief Diversity Officers, sharing their reactions to the key findings as well as best practices and recommendations for companies who want to foster an environment of diversity and inclusion. To top it off, this event will also include recognition of companies who have earned the Champions for Accountability Badge.
