Welcome to all my new subscribers and my 5000 loyal readers who have been with me for the past 20 years.

Doing What You Like is Freedom.

Liking What You Do Is Happiness

Hello Carole Ann,

“It’s the freedom to put a wash on during the day”. This was a quote, worthy of a sage, sprang from one of our students on the Pure Coaching Academy this week.

This was in response to the question what does a life lived on your own terms look like?

You know, goals and dreams are funny old things. It’s not about what the ad men and women would have us buying. Jumping off cliffs into azure waters, making soul mates with orangutans in Borneo or having a zen moment with a margarita on a lilo; the commercialised take on our deepest desires.

All wild and exciting dreams but what about the joy of simply being free from obligation?

The sublime simplicity of these:

• No alarm going off and lying in without a deadline

• Creative mooching around the house

• A long boozy lunch with a dear friend

• A blow dry just for the sake of it

• Nobody else’s needs clouding your day

• Time to stare and daydream

• Reading a book during the day

• Literally no agenda – the day’s your own

• Time for exercise and relaxation

• The joy of getting lost in hobbies

• Liberation from duty, responsibility and chores

Every single one of us craves freedom like oxygen.

Financial freedom, the feeling that your life is your own to do with what you wish. Living free of constraints and compromises where our time belongs to us and peace is our baseline.

It’s why I became a coach. Apart from the deep satisfaction of making a difference to others, it was the freedom of creating a life around what is important. I could be there at the school gate for drop offs and pick ups and never having to struggle with the guilt of missing Christmas plays, fairs and PTA meetings.

Exercising when I want, growing my business and feeling on top of my life was key. No psycho boss, no restricted holiday rotas, no colleague eating curry at their desk next to me. Bliss.

White Space Days

Gift yourself the feeling of pure freedom with a white space day. Block it out in diary. Say no to all offers of coffee, lunch, zoom calls or meet ups. Get up when you want and have zero agenda and no to-do list for the day and see how it feels.

Doing what you like is freedom. Liking what you do is happiness.

It is the pure ecstasy, as our student coach said, “of having the freedom to put a wash on in the middle of the day”.

What is your idea of freedom?
