Greetings!

Doing vs Being: One of life's cycles. Per Eckhart Tolle (and others): The first cycle of our lives is spent doing--building, growing, accumulating, achieving and striving for success, making a life essentially. And per the pundits: The last part is best served by learning to Be--although we should always strive to learn to just be. Being is essential to putting our lives in order, to understanding our inner purpose, and to creating peace. The problem is that our Western thought culture doesn't promote this kind of perspective because success, doing and producing are the penultimate goals in life. There's an inherent evolutionary impulse at the beginning of each life--alive thing (plants, animals, etc.) that builds, requiring us "to do,"  and to grow, acquire, and so forth. Then there's an inherent drive as we age towards Being, meaning attuning to the present moment, becoming aware--becoming conscious. As that desire to stop doing manifests, or as we become unable to "do," many of us resist this natural flow.  We tell ourselves we're getting old and our disability doesn't allow us to do what we once did. Our minds create unhappiness because we want to feel the same as when we were "building" a life. It's an addiction to doing and Being is looked at as failure of some kind. I say: Allow the natural flow of life to be what it will. Learning to Be is what brings our life into focus, allows us to rest totally, and brings us peace.
