LFV doings!
JANUARY, FEBRUARY, MARCH 2022
|
|
Happy New Year ! Little Falls Village is pleased to present our Doings Newsletter for the first quarter of 2022. The last couple of years have been spectacularly unpredictable, yet LFV's members and volunteers have consistently demonstrated the ability to improvise when needed. In spite of our considerable challenges, we have broken records for attendance at our virtual events and exceeded all previous years in volunteer hours to meet the needs of our members. Like all communities, we are a tapestry that requires weavers to make the fabric stronger. We shall continue to weave and fortify those relationships that are critical to the success of our mission. Join us and register today.
Cheers to a fabulous 2022 and your health!

George W. Rutherford, M.D., renowned epidemiologist at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) will provide an update on the current state of COVID-19, focusing specifically on the omicron variant, implications for children under the age of 12, what the rise of this highly infectious variant means for vaccinated and unvaccinated adults and adolescents, and what it will take to move past this surge and end the pandemic. Dr. Rutherford is Professor of Epidemiology, Preventive Medicine, Pediatrics and History and Head of the Division of Infectious Disease and Global Epidemiology in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at UCSF. He also directs the Global Strategic Information program within UCSF’s Institute for Global Health Sciences and the residency program in General Preventive Medicine and Public Health. His work has focused primarily on the epidemiology and control of communicable diseases, both domestically and internationally. He has held a number of positions in public health agencies, including serving State Health Officer and State Epidemiologist for California. His academic interest has been on HIV and other infectious diseases in low- and middle-income countries in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and Eastern Europe. Dr. Rutherford is an advisor to the World Health Organization, the United Nations Joint Programme on HIV and AIDS and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, is the past chair the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Epidemiology and was the first Chair of the Department of Veterans Affairs Research Advisory Council. He has been intimately involved in UCSF’s, San Francisco’s and California’s responses to the COVID-19 pandemic since the earliest days and is leading a major cohort study with Stanford on the epidemiology and prevention of SARS-CoV-2 in the Bay Area. Educated at Stanford University and Duke University School of Medicine, he has degrees in the Classics, Chemistry, History and Medicine. WEDNESDAY 1/26/22 "Finding Meaning and Success: Living a Fulfilled and Productive Life" with Chris Palmer.
Author, speaker, wildlife filmmaker, grandfather, and retired professor Chris Palmer will give an entertaining presentation on how to improve your life. He serves on the Board of Montgomery Hospice, is writing a book on aging, death, and dying, is a hospice volunteer, and runs an “aging well” group for the Bethesda Metro Area Village. During his filmmaking career, he swam with dolphins and whales, came face-to-face with sharks and Kodiak bears, camped with wolf packs, and waded hip-deep through Everglade swamps. Inspired by his new book, Finding Meaning and Success: Living a Fulfilled and Productive Life, he will explore the goals, strategies, and tactics necessary to live a successful, fulfilled, and productive life. He will discuss what matters, consider how we find purpose and meaning, and examine how we can take better care of ourselves. The idea is to actively design our lives rather than drift forward, reacting to what happens to us. It is healthy to look at the person we have become and ask if this is who we want to be. We want to behave in ways true to our most honorable, generous, and best selves.

Monday, January 24 Short Fiction Reading Group, by ZOOM 4:00-5:00 pm. January Selection: "Tooth and Claw" by T.C. Boyle. Published in 2004 The Best American Short Stories
"T.C. Doyle is an American writer with a PhD in nineteenth c. British Literature. He's a lifetime member of the English Department at the University of Southern California. with professional awards spanning 44 years. T.C. states "Literature can be great in all ways, but it's just entertainment like rock'n'roll or a film. If it doesn't capture you on that level, as entertainment, movement of plot, then it doesn't work. The beauty of the language, the characterization, the structure, all that's irrelevant if you're not getting to the reader on that level." Let's explore the symbolism of the story's main character's difficulty to be self-reliant and grapple with life's choices."

Friday, January 21, 10:30 - 11:30 am. ZOOM: "Calder-Picasso" with docent Wendy Adler from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
Pablo Picasso is considered one of the art world's most important and iconic artists, continually inventing new styles of art throughout his career. Alexander Calder is the inventor of mobiles and stabiles, two art forms that had previously not been considered "fine art." Though Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso crossed paths infrequently, their use of line, space, and void is symbiotic. This exhibition, conceived and organized by the grandsons of these artists, highlights the parallels and differences of two giants of 20th century art. Educationalist Wendy Adler of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston will guide you through a discussion of the traveling exhibition Calder/Picasso.

THURSDAY 2/10/22 "Climate Change, Just a Change or a Crisis?" with Bob Ryan.
You may remember Bob Ryan as the first meteorologist to join the Today Show and, after 1980, as chief meteorologist at NBC4 and head of digital weather strategies at ABC7 in Washington. Ryan began his career in the atmospheric sciences as an associate researcher in the Physics Section with Arthur D. Little Inc (ADL). in Cambridge, MA where he conducted research in cloud physics. While at ADL, Ryan began to work part time as a broadcast meteorologist in Boston, a career move which would become full time. Now retired, he continues to work as a consultant on weather and climate matters and serve on committees in the field of communication. In the past he has testified before various committees of Congress and served on the National Academy of Science Board of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate. He was a member of committees of the National Research Council which wrote the "Fair Weather" report and the "Completing the Forecast . . ." report. He also served on the Advisory Committee of the Geoscience Directorate of the National Science Foundation and as the organizing chair of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Committee on Effective Communication of Weather and Climate Information. He is a Certified Consulting Meteorologist, and Fellow and Past President of the AMS. He holds a BS degree in Physics and M.S. in Atmospheric Science from the University at Albany.

WEDNESDAY 2/23/22 "The Impact of Age on Auditory Learning" with Dan Sanes and Beverly Wright.
A remarkable feature of human sensory perception is that it can be improved with practice. In fact, practice can give rise to perceptual improvements that leverage our most profound skills, such as aural language and musical ability. While it is often assumed that children are the best learners, laboratory research shows that the capacity to learn with practice improves well into adolescence. In other words, when given exactly the same training experience, children learn less than adults. Moreover, while it is thought that the capacity to learn declines during aging, older adults whose auditory perception is impaired can recover those skills with a brief period of practice. The behavioral changes during learning appear to arise from changes within auditory cortex. For example, in adult animals, the responses of individual cortex neurons improve in lockstep with behavioral improvement during practice. Furthermore, in adolescent animals, learning is reduced - just as in humans - and this reduction is mirrored by poorer cortical neuron responses. Taken together, these observations suggest that training has the potential to aid perceptual performance throughout life, so long as the training is tailored to one’s age.
|
Dr. Dan Sanes is a Professor in the Center for Neural Science at New York University. He earned a doctorate in Biology from Princeton, followed by postdoctoral fellowships at Yale and the University of Virginia. His lab explores how early auditory experiences, including both learning and hearing loss, influence the development of cortical function. Dr. Sanes is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2010, co-authored the undergraduate textbook “Development of the Nervous System,” and serves as a Senior Editor at the Journal of Neuroscience. His research is funded by the NIH.
|
Dr. Beverly Wright is a Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northwestern University, and serves as Director of the Hugh Knowles Center for Clinical and Basic Science in Hearing and Its Disorders. She earned her doctorate in Experimental Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin, followed by postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Florida and the University of California at San Francisco. Dr. Wright’s research laboratory explores the general principles of auditory learning in humans, a process that supports both speech comprehension and musical abilities. Her research also focusses on how learning depends on age, sensory experience (hearing loss), and cognitive background (e.g., language and reading disorders). Research on perceptual learning may lead to more effective training strategies for enhancing normal perceptual capacities and treating perceptual disorders.

Friday, February 4, 10:30 - 11:30 am. ZOOM: "Incomparable Impressionism" from the Musuem of Fine Arts, Houston, presented by a docent from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
For the first time, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is lending some 100 of the most significant paintings and works on paper from its renowned Impressionist collection for an exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, its only U.S. venue. The extraordinary collection of French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist work traces the evolution of the radical movement, from its roots in the novel, naturalistic landscapes of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Charles François Daubigny, and other painters of the Barbizon School; to the early “optical color” experimentations in plein-air landscape painting by Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Alfred Sisley; to the frank depictions of modern urban life by Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.Among the highlights is a display of 16 canvases by Monet featuring his most beloved sites. An integral aspect of the exhibition is a fascinating selection of works on paper showcasing the artists’ working methods.

THURSDAY 3/10/22 "How Immigrants Influenced 20th Century American Design" with Elizabeth Lay.
America experienced a wave of European migrants during the early 20th century. Some were escaping war and oppression while others sought opportunities in a growing democracy. These immigrants included giants of architecture and design: Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, Laszlo Moholy Nagy, Eliel and Loja Saarinen, and Joseph and Anni Albers. They arrived in the U.S. by securing teaching positions at universities throughout the country, where they inspired the next generation of designers and architects such as Charles and Ray Eames, Florence Knoll, Jack Lenore Larson, and I.M. Pei. Lay examines how the contributions of their work and teachings changed the face of American design—including noteworthy local buildings that you will recognize! Elizabeth Lay is a Design Historian and the Curator at Montgomery History’s Beall Dawson House and Stonestreet Museum in Rockville. She holds a Master’s degree in the History of Decorative Arts from the Smithsonian-GMU program in Design History, specializing in 20th century textiles, fashion, and women designers. Additionally, Elizabeth Lay is an Adjunct Professor at George Washington University teaching Women Designers of the Twentieth Century and 20th Century Costume.

Wednesday 3/23/22 “Personal Property: Things to Know About Valuing, Keeping, Tossing, and Selling” with Daniel Sanders.
“Stuff” as we all know it is known formally as tangible personal property. These items of personal property are the things that reflect a person’s life story. Some are purchased, some are gifted, some are made, and some are inherited. Regardless of how they came into your life, they tell your history or your herstory. Whether items are ordinary, exceptional, fine, valuable, or everyday, they have a financial, emotional, or usefulness value. Daniel Sanders, the President and CEO of Four Sales Ltd, will spend some time with us to explore personal property and how to value it, how to determine whether to keep or toss it, and finally how to go about selling, donating, or disposing of it.
Four Sales, Ltd., founded in 1972, is the leading and most innovative estate sales company in the Washington metropolitan area. During the past 50 years, Four Sales has conducted and represented over 5,000 clients in the Greater DC-Metro Area and conduct an average of approximately 150 sales events per year. These sales include onsite estate sale and auction events and are conducted in small, large, and historic homes, as well as condominiums and townhouses, in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and sometimes West Virginia. In addition, Four Sales has standing relationships with well-known auction houses around the country for the brokered sale of high value items. We pride ourselves on serving our clients with compassion and professionalism while offering our customers a pleasant shopping experience.
Daniel Sanders has run Four Sales for more than 16 years after taking over from the founders after 34 years. He brings more than 15 years of international business operations experience to Four Sales Ltd. In the 1990’s, Sanders worked for 3M in Europe, and, after returning to the United States, Daniel worked with start-up businesses in the United States and Canada before accepting the challenge of running operations, sales, marketing, and brand management for Four Sales.

Tuesday, March 8. ZOOM: Alma Thomas "Everything is Beautiful" led by docent from the Frist Art Museum.
Everything Is Beautiful provides a comprehensive overview of the artist’s long life (1891–1978) with more than one hundred works, including her rarely seen theatrical designs and beloved abstract paintings. The exhibition will demonstrate how her artistic practices extended to every facet of her life—from community service and teaching to gardening and dress. A trailblazer, Thomas was the first Black American woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1972, which was similar to her exhibition at Fisk University in 1971. The exhibition will be organized around multiple themes from Thomas’s experience. These themes include the context of Thomas’s Washington Color School cohort, the creative communities connected to Howard University (Vice President Kamala Harris’s alma mater), and peers who protested museums that failed to represent artists of color.

Wednesday, May 18, 11:00 - noon (Rain Date May 19).OUTING: American University Campus: Spring Garden Tour with Sharon Metcalf.
Meet at 10:45 by the flower circle near the front entrance of the School of International Service. Walking tour begins at 11 am, and ends at noon. Followed by a optional brown bag lunch in the shaded ampitheater. Join us for this customized eco-tour in the campus quad for an hour’s walk, followed by a brown bag lunch and discussion in the open-air amphitheater shaded among canopy trees. During the past decade, AU has transformed its campus into an award-winning arboretum and garden oasis. Now ranked #4 among most beautiful US urban campuses, the 84-acre grounds include over 4,000 trees and 385 different species of plants and shrubs. Meandering through the public gardens and pocket parks visitors will find unique spaces to pause for contemplation among the flowering trees, ornamental grasses, and seasonal plantings. As part of its ‘American Dream is Green’ campaign, AU has set out to become a carbon net zero campus and is well on the way to achieving that goal by shifting energy production to clean, renewable wind power, installing solar photovoltaic panels on new LEED buildings and laying permeable pavers along campus walkways to capture water runoff. Sharon Metcalf, former AU Director of Strategic Partnerships, will lead a special LFV walking tour in May when the gardens will be in full bloom and the campus relatively quiet following commencement. Since her retirement, Sharon has continued to stay involved in university activities and helps to oversee AU’s honey-producing beehives on the green roof of the student union. Wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes so you can enjoy wandering through the various garden spots. On-campus parking is available in the SIS (School of International Service) building underground garage. Enter the garage at the intersection of Nebraska & New Mexico Avenues. Pay right after parking by inputting your license plate # in the parking machines located in the elevator lobbies of SIS garage. $2.00 per hour; cash or credit card. Save the date! June 16, 2022, Hillwood Museum Outing. "Grace of Monaco: Princess in Dior"
Fashion and mementos from the legendary life of Princess Grace of Monaco will appear in North America for the first time at Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens, celebrating her dedicated relationship with haute couturier Christian Dior.
The special exhibition Grace of Monaco: Princess in Dior will explore the longstanding collaboration between Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco, and Marc Bohan, artistic director at Christian Dior, through clothing, accessories, photos, and more, on special loan from the Palace of Monaco.
Presented in North America for the first time, the exhibition, which originated at the Musée Dior in Granville, France, in honor of the House of Dior’s 90th anniversary, offers insights into the life of an icon, whose image was created in response to Hollywood’s wish for glamour and the desire for elegance in her stately duties. Grace of Monaco is a tribute to Bohan’s muse in the 1960s and 1970s and a celebration of their enduring partnership through haute couture.
Like Kelly, Hillwood founder Marjorie Merriweather Post was a tastemaker who carefully cultivated her image, choosing smart, elegant pieces, and treating her apparel as she did her collections, as a connoisseur. As Hillwood interprets 20th-century fashion through Post’s own collection of jewelry, accessories, and apparel, it is fitting to expand this narrative through showcasing Kelly’s place in the world of 20th-century haute couture.

I want to highlight a weekly event in our community that is not to be missed! The Brookmont Farm Market is a year-round open-air extravaganza of over 30 chefs, bakers, and farmers plus craftspeople in the center of the Brookmont Village Green. Every Wednesday the space comes alive from 3-7:30 with wonderful FREE music concerts, food trucks, and more. The market is volunteer-run and does not charge vendors to participate - a unique model for supporting these wonderful, immigrant-owned, small businesses. Feast on Spanish fare from Jose Andres' Pepe food truck while you listen to jazz standards. Sample the wine and delicious baked goods. Relax in a beautiful family-friendly green space that even welcomes pups!
Enjoy just-picked fruits and produce, dairy, jewelry and ceramics from Turkey, textiles from India, soaps and scents from France, and a wide array of produce and prepared healthy and organic foods including gluten-free and vegetarian/vegan options. Whatever your preference, the Brookmont Farm & Craft Market has it! Come to shop and stay for dinner and music. In front of 6423 Broad Street, Bethesda, MD 20816.
