A Word from our PFA President, Dawn Sue-Dare
Wow. Can you believe we only have FOUR full months of school left this year? It's already become the time of year when parents start thinking (read: worrying) about where their child(ren) will do in the summer months -- day camp, sleepaway camp, family trip, or something else!

We had a lot going during the first month of 2019! Between Talent Show tryouts, a field trip to see the Shanghai Acrobats, Ancestor Celebrations, Kindness week...our Dolphins were busy!

A special shout out to our SSC members ( Alan Lazar, Fedra Tamaadon, Negin Ghaffari, Orit Geoola, and Sophie Basseri ) and our school counselor, Heather Carter , for coordinating our "Kindness Challenge Project" during Kindness Week! The kids had a lot of fun creating the "Kindness Community Chains", which will be displayed in the library.

Thank you to all the families who came to show support during our January restaurant FUN-raiser at Sharky's Calabasas, and during our shopping fundraiser day at SANE Boutique !

I hope you'll join us at our PFA Meeting next week - Tuesday, February 12th, from 8:30 - 9:30AM in the MPR! We always welcome new faces at our meetings -- we'd love to hear your ideas & feedback, and we are always searching for new volunteers to join our various committees or become chairs for our special events!

Happy February! Go Dolphins!

Dawn Sue-Dare
2018-19 PFA President
Counselor's Corner with Ms. Carter
This month we continue to celebrate Empathy and Understanding as our character dispositions. In January, Bay Laurel participated in The Great Kindness Challenge! The week was filled with activities and discussions around showing acts of kindness and receiving them as well.
A big thank you to our parents who volunteered their time to encourage kindness with Bay Laurel’s Kindness Chain! Thank you to our teachers for encouraging kind deeds every day, all of our staff for recognizing when a student has gone above and beyond what is expected and rewarding them with a character card, and to our Peaceful Players for encouraging acts of kindness for the Great Kindness Challenge at our assembly (see picture below).

Homework Tip : It is okay to take a break. Determining how frequent a student needs a homework break is going to vary from individual to individual. Many of our kids are movers. If your child is a mover it may be helpful to have them walk around, jump rope, jump on a trampoline, or do jumping jacks. Standing and working can be helpful, too. Setting a timer can be useful because a student may be less resistant when the ownership on time is removed from the parent or guardian and given to the timer.
Parenting Tip - Become Social Media Savvy! Our Social Media presentations in January had so much information on helping parents navigate the digital world with their children. You can find the link on our Bay Laurel homepage under “Latest News” https://www.lvusd.org/bles
