A Word from our PFA President, Dawn Sue-Dare
Okay, I admit it: I blinked. I blinked, and December was gone, and we are now on the first page of a brand new calendar. When did it become 2019?

A HUGE shout-out and Mahalo to all of our volunteers in December! First, Tricia DeTuno , for scheduling and rescheduling our Make-Up Picture Day...thank you for making everything so easy! And I've gotta give props to the Step It Up "Day of Awesomeness" chair, Jen Jacoby , and the rest of the "Day of Awesomeness" crew: Alicia Weintraub, Amber Laks, Amelia Damborg, Alison Scher, Aliza Sudry, Danielle Gold, Debbie Buxer, Elise Nach, Emily Downen, Erin Mediuch, Erin Witkow, Harvinder Keila, Jackie Astman, Lindsay Strull, Melina Madha, Melissa Singletary, Michelle Gharabegian, Michelle Mironer, Michelle Nardiello, Nicole Ghajar, Orit Geoola, Rebecca Slutsky, Robyn Feldman, Sandhya Kawatra, Season Skuro, and Yolanda Garcia . Without their help, the "Day of Awesomeness" would not have run as well as it did! Thank you all for your dedication and hard work!

Thank you to all the families who came to show support during our holiday shopping FUN-raiser at Olive Alchemy !

I also want to send a special shout-out of CONGRATULATIONS to the Bay Laurel cast of "Mary Poppins"! You put on a " supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" show last month, and we are all so proud of you!

I hope you'll join us at our PFA Meeting this week - Tuesday, January 8th, from 8:30 - 9:30AM in the MPR! We always welcome new faces at our meetings -- we'd love to hear your ideas & feedback, and we are always searching for new volunteers to join our various committees or become chairs for our special events!

Let's make 2019 the best year yet! Go Dolphins!

Happy New Year and welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday spent with friends and family. This month kicks off Empathy and Understanding as our character dispositions Bay Laurel will be celebrating in January and February.

During the break, I hope that you had a wonderful time spent with your children, traveling, reading, movies, and playing. Your children are not “just playing” - they are developing math concepts, developing language, building social skills, developing problem-solving skills, cause and effect, as well as fine and gross motor skills. When  you  play with your child, you are not only helping your child learn to connect with you and teaching them how to build relationships, but you are helping them build self-esteem. Look for a good time to join your child (put your phone away and give them all of your attention). Get down on the floor with them and ask, “Can I play with you?” Follow their lead; try not to change the play. You can try imitating the noises they make or describe what you see them doing. Try to avoid asking too many questions or praising the play. Of course, you can tell them how much fun you are having.

Here are some different types of play:

Dramatic/Fantasy play-  Got a kid who loves to play  dress up ? How about "doctor" or "restaurant?" Through this type of play, not only does your child's imagination get a workout, but they learn how to take turns, cooperate, share and work on  language development . Through  role play , kids are also able to learn about functioning in the greater community.

Competitive play - Whether she's beating her brother at Chutes and Ladders or playing on a local  soccer team , your child is engaging in competitive play. Rules and turn-taking are the big lessons taken from this type of play. This can be a very fun type of play if your child wins, but be prepared to talk your child through it if she loses.

Physical play  - Gross  and  fine motor skills  really come into play here, whether your child is  throwing a ball  or  riding a bike Physical play  is important because it encourages kids to  be active . Get that energy out!

Constructive play -  Building with blocks/legos. Making a road for toy cars . Constructing a fort out of couch pillows. Constructive play teaches kids about manipulation, building and fitting things together.  Cognitive skills  are important here too as a child learns to figure out how to make something work best, whether it is a block tower that won't stand up or a sand castle that keeps collapsing.

Homework Tip : Getting back into the swing of homework can be difficult after the winter break. Here are a few tips to help!
Check understanding  - Be sure your child understands new assignments before he or she starts working on them. This one can save lots of late-evening tears!
Guide, but don't correct  - If your child needs help, offer ideas that can help her sort out the problem, but don't give her the answers.
Get organized for tomorrow  - Remind your child to pack the backpack before going to bed. Even the best homework effort doesn't do much good if it's left on the desk or kitchen table!

Parenting Tip - Take care of YOU! It was a busy last couple of months. This month may be the month to recharge your batteries, sit on the couch and enjoy your coffee or tea, take three deep breaths before rolling out of bed and starting your day. YOU deserve it!

Please, always feel free to connect with me. I am on campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00am to 3:00pm and Wednesdays from 9:30am to 1:00pm and can be reached by email, hcarter@lvusd.org .
