A Word from our PFA President, Dawn Sue-Dare
Welcome to the 2018-19 school year! If we haven't met in person yet, my name is Dawn Sue-Dare, and I am honored to be your PFA President for 2018-19. A little bit about me: I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and I attended Punahou School (the same school President Barack Obama attended!). I moved to California for college, and stayed "on the mainland" after graduating. My husband and I have a 2nd grade daughter, who is ecstatic to begin her 4th year as a Dolphin (we started in TK)!

Our school year is off to a fantastic start -- between our new Bay Laurel Spirit Wear designs, School Supply Sorting Day, the TK/K Welcome Picnic, Registration Day, Back-to-School Nights, the PFA Parent Welcome Breakfast, the 5th Grade Back-to-School Event, and our TWO restaurant FUN-raisers at Rosti and Jeni's Ice Creams during our first week back at school...it's a great year so far!

A HUGE shout-out and mahalo to all of our parent volunteers who made all of our back-to-school events happen: Dawn Goldfarb, Heather Holmes, Marina Lakier, and Lindsay Strull (Spirit Wear); Carrie Brenner (School Supply Sorting Day); Samantha Barnett & Wendy Russo (TK/K Welcome Picnic); Debbie Buxer (Registration Day); Danielle Gold & Robin Feldman (PFA Parent Welcome Breakfast). Thank you all for your dedication and hard work!

I hope you'll join us at our monthly PFA meeting next week, on Tuesday, 9/11 at 8:30AM in the MPR. Come meet new friends and see what we're all about! We are always looking for new ideas, volunteers to join our various committees, and chairs for our special events! Don't forget the October PFA meeting will be in the evening!

I wish everyone a fun and successful school year!

Dawn Sue-Dare
2018-19 PFA President
Counselor's Corner with Ms. Carter
Welcome back Bay Laurel Families! And a big welcome to our new Journeys, Kindergarten, and 1 st thru 5 th grade students! I am your school counselor, Heather Carter. I hope that everyone had a wonderful summer and is looking forward to a fantastic year at Bay Laurel!

Some upcoming and exciting activities at Bay Laurel include the character traits celebrated and encouraged by the entire staff, character recess activities, college day Tuesday, in-class presentations encouraging positive character, District Office parent presentations, Second Step Social Skills Program (J-1 st ), Student Club/Group support (Thursdays at lunch), and our Peaceful Players Program. The Peaceful Players Program is designed to help the 1 st through 3 rd grade students examine conflict and develop resolutions on the playground. Peaceful Players are 4 th and 5 th graders who are trained in activities to improve their self-concept, leadership abilities, and communication skills while encouraging cooperation among students. Bay Laurel also will continue the Buddy Bench Program. The goal of the Buddy Bench is to ease playground loneliness and teach students empathy by reaching out and helping other students. The Buddy Bench also offers a way for students to make new friends. Our new Buddy Bench will be arriving soon, donated generously from Girl Scout Troop 376. I hope members of this troop are reading this….THANK YOU!

We are so lucky to have a school counseling intern, again, at Bay Laurel. Her name is Candice Christensen. She is wonderful, please make sure to say hello to her when you have a chance.

Ms. Christensen and I spent the first couple of weeks saying hello and introducing ourselves to the classes. I like to begin the year making sure that all the students know who we are, where to find us, and how we can help. We presented an activity on working together and making choices in our school that support one another. Please ask your child about what they learned about being “Better Together”.

I also like to take the opportunity, at the beginning of the year, to explain the school counseling program at Bay Laurel. The goal of the elementary counseling program is to identify and meet the needs of students, parents, and school personnel. The counselor's role is to provide early intervention for students to ensure their success in school and throughout life. Counselors work proactively as a team with staff, parents, school psychologists, and community to create an atmosphere where children's needs are met through prevention and early identification.
Elementary counselors work with students individually, in group settings, and in the classroom. In addition, counselors work with parents to help their children reach their personal goals and build on their individual strengths. Some of the goals for the counseling program include:
1.     Building self-esteem
2.     Academic success
3.     Providing a safe place to talk about school concerns
4.     Developing stronger interpersonal and social skills
5.     Improving attitudes about school and learning
6.     Developing problem-solving skills
7.     Working through individual and personal issues and concerns
8.     And to develop programs that positively reach all of the students on campus
Students can be referred many different ways for counseling. Students can be referred by parents, teachers, other school staff, and they can refer themselves. Counselors are able to connect parents to school resources and community support as they are requested and needed.

Thank you for stopping by Counselor’s Corner. I look forward to working with your children and invite you to contact me with any questions, concerns, or thoughts. I am on campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00am to3:00pm and Wednesdays from 9:30am to 1:00pm.

Thank you,
Heather Carter

Annual Fund Drive (AFD) - We Need Your Support!
Our Annual Fund Drive is in full swing!  Thank you to all the families listed below who have generously donated to our Annual Fund Drive!

If you gave at the Bronze level donation or higher, the new Bay Laurel magnets have arrived and can be picked up in the office. If you turned in your form by 8/31/18, your child's homework pass will be distributed in the coming weeks!

If you have not donated yet, it's not too late!   Every class who reaches 100% participation will get to take part in a special activity with Mrs. Cortina.

100% PARTICIPATION = 100% SUCCESS!

This is our largest fundraiser of the year and these funds are crucial to the continued success of our school.

Most large companies (and even some small ones!) will match your donation. Please check with your company and let us know!

You can turn in your form to your child's teacher or the office. You can also pay online at

You can find the AFD form on our PFA website at  http://www.baylaurelpfa.org/annual-fund-drive.html .
