Counselor's Corner with Ms. Baldi
|
|
Welcome back Bay Laurel Families to another great year of learning!
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you. My name is Cheryl Baldi and I am the new school counselor. I am excited to be a part of this amazing team of educators, staff and community. I have enjoyed meeting several parents and students this past couple of weeks, and have received such a warm welcome. I look forward to helping your child succeed in meeting their social, emotional and academic goals.
Some of the upcoming events and programs that I will be doing include the Popsicle Social for new students 1st-5th, Second Step Social Skills Program (TK-1st), in-class presentations connected to character traits, encouraging positive character with recess activities, Student Club Connect, Buddy Bench, and our Peaceful Players Program, which provides older students the opportunity to take on leadership roles while helping younger students make good choices.
The goal of the elementary school counseling program is to identify and meet the needs of students, parents, and school personnel. The counselor’s role is to provide early intervention for students to ensure their success in school and throughout life. Counselors work proactively as a team with staff, parents, school psychologists, and community to create an atmosphere where children’s needs are met through prevention and early identification. Elementary counselors work with students individually, in group settings, and in the classroom. In addition, counselors work with parents to help their children reach their personal goals and build on their individual strengths.
Some of the goals for the counseling program include:
- Building self-esteem
- Academic success
- Providing a safe place to talk about school concerns
- Developing strong interpersonal and social skills
- Improving attitudes about school and learning
- Developing problem solving skills
- Working through individual and personal issues and concerns
- And to develop programs that positively reaches all of the students on campus
Students can be referred for counseling in several different ways. They can be referred by parents, teachers, other school staff, or they can refer themselves. As well, counselors are able to connect parents to school resources and community support. Home and school together make a wonderful partnership and the beneficiary of all of that love, mentoring, support and care is ultimately your child.
Thank you for stopping by the Counselor’s Corner. I look forward to working with your children and invite you to contact me with any questions, concerns, or thoughts. I am on campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00am to 3:00pm, and Wednesdays from 9:00am to 12:30pm.
Thank you,
Cheryl Baldi
School Counselor
