Tifton Observes National Doughnut Day

This Friday, June 7, is National Doughnut Day, and the local Salvation Army, with the help of local businesses, is continuing the tradition of offering free doughnuts to those who have served in the armed forces.

All veterans are welcome to visit the Salvation Army's Tifton Service Center between 10 a.m.-noon on Friday for doughnuts and coffee. The center is at 1205 Highway 82 East.

Tifton's Salvation Army, D. Coleman Realty and Daylight Donuts are sponsoring the local event.

The first national observance in 1938 celebrated the "doughnut lassies"  -- Salvation Army "lassies," the female volunteers who gave doughnuts to soldiers, or "doughboys," in World War I. The lassies also provided writing supplies, stamps, clothes-mending and home-cooked meals for the soldiersI.

The national observance is now the first Friday every June.
