Not surprisingly, and as many market watchers had predicted, the stock market has been re-testing its February lows. And, as shown in the chart below, volatility has returned with a vengeance after being absent for most of 2017. (Chart is one-year performance of the VIX.)
Many advisors are simply trying to weather the storm - answering client questions or sending out flash reports or recording podcasts after each large move in the market.
But uncertainty also brings with it a great opportunity to distinguish yourself from the competition. If your current marketing calendar does not include educational seminars, now would be a great time to consider adding them.
Even the most astute investors need to have their hands held during volatile times. They also need to be reminded to focus on the long term and they often need to be re-educated on some of the fundamentals of investing.
Clients as well as prospects will appreciate that you are taking the time to educate - not just offer re-assurance - and that you are being proactive and helpful.
