Did you know? A 2021 report from the Abell Foundation found that 23% of Maryland's households lack broadband internet service, and approximately 290,000 households that don't have access to a desktop, laptop, or tablet device. Digital inequities have now become a factor in the social determinants of health, persisting as barriers to health and public services, educational and social opportunities, and other vital resources. In today's increasingly digital age, embracing technology isn't just a luxury, but a necessity

To help bridge the digital divide, any Marylander can connect with UME’s Marylanders Online program, an initiative of the University of Maryland Extension (UME) in partnership with the College of Information Studies working to promote digital literacy, equity, and inclusion throughout the state of Maryland. This digital literacy project provides free digital skills training and technology support through virtual, one-on-one sessions, as well as on-site training and events.

Marylanders Online has a toll-free tech helpline staffed by a team of knowledgeable Digital Navigators that can be reached at 1-866-206-8467, Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or by emailing [email protected]. UME Tech Educators are also available to assist residents with developing their computer skills, finding available resources, or applying for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), a federally-funded program providing reduced-rate internet to individuals with low income. Stay up to date by signing up for the Marylanders Online newsletter or learn more at marylandersonline.umd.edu.

Natural disasters, like floods, storms, and earthquakes, can strike at any time without warning and disrupt our normal lives. Being prepared for a disaster will help protect both you and your loved ones during an emergency. Here are some steps and resources we recommend to prepare for a disaster before crisis strikes.
