The Arecibo Telescope was the largest radio telescope in the world for more than 50 years. Built in the hills of Puerto Rico, the iconic structure contributed to countless scientific discoveries and even served as backdrop in several Hollywood movies.

In 2020, the system of steel cables supporting the telescope underwent a progressive failure, and the structure eventually collapsed. Thornton Tomasetti provided emergency response and safety engineering to stabilize and restore the collapse site to a safe condition as well as forensic investigation to determine the cause of the collapse.

This talk will present the emergency clean-up activities, stabilization of roadways and towers, mitigation of environmental impact, post-collapse remediation and recovery to make the site safe. The talk will also provide an overview of the investigation, which involves documents review, structural analysis, and laboratory testing to determine how and why some of the cable socket connections failed after decades of service.
